  1. Overview of an Innovative Collision Avoidance Technology for Commercial Vehicles Prepared by Kentucky Transportation Center September2011 “Coverhaul18” System

  2. GSYS Military Products, LLC • Technology driven company located in Bowling Green, KY • Developed a Driver Warning, Communication, and Heavy Vehicle Lighting System • For Combat Vehicles and Commercial Use

  3. Coverhaul18 Technology In-cab display unit Marker Light & Sensor

  4. System Capabilities/Features • Collision Avoidance Technology – alerts driver to presence of objects in the vehicle’s “blind spots.” • System provides wrap-around coverage—detects objects beside or behind the vehicle.

  5. System Capabilities/Features • Different colored lights indicate the distance from the vehicle to the object. • Within 15 feet – green light • Within 10 feet – yellow light • Within 5 feet – red light • If preferred by user, display can be incorporated into side-view mirrors.

  6. System Installation • Ultrasonic sensors are built into standard marker lights. • Sensors can be installed on the tractor, trailer, or both.

  7. System Installation • Installation is as simple as replacing existing marker lights with new marker lights that have integrated sensors. • Display device is installed in truck cab. • No new wiring is required—sensors use existing truck electrical wiring to communicate with display device.

  8. System Testing • System is currently installed on four commercial fleet tractor-trailers. • Has been on these vehicles for an average of 18 months. • User feedback has been positive. • Has also been tested on a transit vehicle at Western Kentucky University. • Also being tested on two military vehicles.

  9. Proposed Technology Evaluation • The Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) has developed a draft work plan for evaluating the Coverhaul18 technology. • Anticipated one-year evaluation • Anticipated cost less than $100K • Evaluation will address the following questions: • How well does the system work? Does it do what it was designed to do? • What are the benefits and costs associated with the system? • What enhancements could be made to the system to increase its value and maximize safety benefits? • KTC is currently trying to identify a source of funding for this evaluation.

  10. Potential Applications • Commercial Fleet Vehicles • Currently installed on four units • Military Vehicles • Testing has been performed • Two units have been ordered for installation on military vehicles overseas • Transit Vehicles • Has been tested on one vehicle • State DOT Fleet Vehicles • Currently in discussions with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet • School Buses • Currently exploring this possibility.
