  2. Political & social event • The removal of user fees has had a negative impact on health care in that the purchase of drugs has been very difficult for both government and CHAL institutions

  3. Impact on health care delivery system • The Global Economic Recession has affected Lesotho in the same devastating rate as the rest of the world.

  4. Mission & Vision • Lesotho Nurses Association is committed to look after the interests of its members for professional development, through protection of members’ rights, continuing education and regulation of nursing and through development of nursing care standards.

  5. Regulation • Lesotho Nursing Council, it is an independent regulatory body predominantly run by nurses elected by other nurses. • Lesotho Nursing Council works on regulatory issues in collaboration with LNA to ensure adherence • Nurses and Midwives Act 1998-Amended in 2009 but not yet approved by parliament. Professionalism • There are approved Nursing Standards developed by nurses through the office of the Chief Nursing Officer

  6. Objectives of LNA • LNA works on professional issues e.g Developing policies, standards of care, and guidelines. • Also looks after the interests and welfare of its members

  7. Recognition • We are recognized as a professional association by the MOHSW & CHAL • Principal Secretary of Ministry of Health views LNA as her right hand in taking care of the welfare of health care providers. • LNA is invited for almost all ministerial plans to represent the interest of nurses.

Membership • Nursing Assistants – Associate members • Student Nurses – Junior members • Enrolled Nurses • Registered Nurses and Midwives – Full members • Retired Nurses Numbers • 600 Registered Nurses & Midwives • No. of student nurses fluctuates • 18 Branches in 10 administrative Districts Source of funds • Member’s annual subscription fees used for general running of the LNA office

Impact of affiliation with SANNAM • Care of Carers Strategies • Prevention of workplace violence in the Health Sector • Establishment of Wellness Centre of Excellence for health care workers and their immediate relatives in 2007 • Twinning with Swaziland Nurses Association Collaboration • EGPAF • ICAP

  12. Achievements • Amendment of the LNA Constitution • Free and fair elections • Gender equity within the LNA structures • Wellness Centre • Executive committee • LNA managed to successfully advocate for the establishment of the Directorate of Nursing • 32 members of LNA attended the ICN Congress in Durban (MOH-12, DENOSA 4, LNA solicited funds from the business community and other donors).

  13. Challenges • Gross shortage of nurses perpetuated by ill health and death of nurses • Membership growing at a very slow rate therefore the annual membership fee of R100.00 is not adequate to run an organization • Sustainability of the LNA Projects e.g Wellness Centre, Workplace Violence

  14. Way Forward • To have immovable assets e.g permanent infrastructure that can be rented to generate funds for sustainability • To increase the LNA membership to +/- 98% of the nurses. • Hold an extra-ordinary meeting on the 6-7 March to discuss “issues” in nursing such as -Task Shifting -Maternal mortality • Develop the strategic plan for nursing
