  1. 中國材料科學會2004年年會暨國科會研究成果發表會Flexural and Peel Properties of High Performance Mg/Carbon-Fiber/PEEK Laminated Composites郭木城1,2 黃至青11 國立中山大學材料科學研究所 2 崑山科技大學高分子材料系 NSC 92-2216-E-110-017 Tel: (07)5254070 jacobc@mail.nsysu.edu.tw Abstract Mg/Carbon-Fiber/PEEK laminated composites were successfully fabricated through simple hot pressing. The flexural and peel properties of this Mg based laminated composites are examined and analyzed. The flexural stress and modulus along the longitudinal direction are 960 MPa and 54.6 GPa, respectively, suggesting a sufficiently high resistance against bending deflection. The peel strength is about 150 N, superior to that of the epoxy-resin-adhered Al/CFRP laminated composites. Experimental Flexural Test Three-point bending tests according to ASTM D 790-02. Span-to-depth ratio 28:1; strain rate 1.7x10-4 s-1. Peeling Test T-peel tests according to ASTM D 1876-95. OM micrograph taken from the peel-tested specimen, Mg layer without CrO3 etching . Schematic drawing of the Mg based laminated composite, layers 1, 3 and 5 are Mg and layers 2 and 4 are APC-2 (with 4 foils). The longitudinal (L) direction is indicated. Results OM micrograph taken from the peel-tested specimen, Mg layer with CrO3 etching . The lighter-contrasted PEEK resin and the broken carbon fibers adhered on the Mg phase. The fractured Mg/CF/PEEK laminated composites for the longitudinal configuration of carbon fibers. The loading direction is indicated. Flexural stress of the Mg/CF/PEEK Mg based laminated composite along the longitudinal direction. Flexural modulus of the Mg/CF/PEEK Mg based laminated composite along the longitudinal direction. The fractured Mg/CF/PEEK laminated composites for the transverse configuration of carbon fibers. The loading direction is indicated. OM micrograph taken from the peel-tested specimen, APC-2 layer. The PEEK resin and carbon fibers were peeled from the APC-2 prepreg. • Summary • The Mg/CF/PEEK Mg based laminated composites were successfully fabricated through a simple hot pressing method. This promising method can fabricate high performances and low density laminated composites in terms of tensile as well as flexural properties. • The flexural modulus, stress and strain along the longitudinal and transverse directions of the Mg based laminated composite are 54.6 GPa, 960 MPa and 0.03; and 36.5 GPa, 318 MPa and 0.07, respectively. The current laminated composite shows sufficiently high resistance to bending deflection. • Multiple fracture modes are observed in the longitudinal flexural specimen, while a more simple behavior is seen in transverse counterpart. • The peel strength of the Mg/APC-2/Mg laminate is superior to that of the epoxy-resin-adhered Al/CFRP laminated composites. • Pretreatment of the Mg sheets with or without CrO3 etching shows significant differences in terms of the resulting interfacial bonding between Mg and APC-2. • Acknowledgement • The authors gratefully acknowledge the sponsorship from National Science Council of Taiwan, ROC, under the project number NSC 92-2216-E-110-017.
