Then give the answer the sign of the number with the greater absolute value. 56. negative 57. positive 58. negative 59. positive 60. B 61. H 62. B 63. G 64. < 65. > 66. > 67. > 68. < 69. < 1-5

  7. R16 9-11-13 • Practice with Addition and Subtraction of Integers • 7.NS.1.c, 7.NS.1d • Lesson Objective: Students will be able to solve • real-world problems with using integer addition • and subtraction.

  8. Traffic Light L16 Learning Goal: I will… What I already know about adding and subtracting integers…. PROOF OF LEARNING: guided practice Reflection

  9. Q-TIPS BOX the ? Key words

  10. Q-TIPS What is the difference between the two elevations? Difference; One is above sea level and one is below sea level. 29,028 - (-1,312) =

  11. Reflection: Write and solve a word problem that involves subtraction of integers. Homework: Handout on word problems.

  12. If time allows, play card games with integers.

  13. GAMES WITH INTEGERS Red cards - Negative Black cards – Positive Ace = 1 Jack = 10 Queen = 11 King = 1 Joker = 0

  14. Integer Addition WarEach player lays down two cards. The player with the greatest sum wins all four cards. These cards are set aside to count at the end of the game. When all cards have been played, the player with the most cards wins

  15. Integer Addition SnapCards are placed face down in a pile in front of each player. Each player takes the top card from his/her pile and lays that card down face up as the opponent is doing the same. The first player to say the correct sum of the two cards wins the two cards. These cards are set aside to count at the end of the game. When all cards have been played, the player with the most cards wins.

  16. TWENTY-FIVE SUBTRACTING INTEGERS CARD GAME Two or more students may play. Deal out as many cards as possible so that each player Has an equal number of cards. Put aside any extra cards. Black cards are positive and red cards are negative. Black Ace = 1 Red Ace = -1 Black Jacks, Queens and Kings = 10 Red Jacks, Queens and Kings = -10 The game continues until someone shows a card that, when subtracted results in a an answer of exactly 25. That person collects all the cards that have been played. At the end of the game, the person with the most cards wins.

  17. At the start of the game, have each player place his or her cards in a stack, face down. Then ask the player to the right of the dealer to turn up one card and say the number on the card. • For example, if the player turns up a black eight, he or she says 8. • Continue from one player to the next in a clockwise direction. The second player turns up a card, subtracts it from the first card, and gives the answer to the problem aloud. (May use paper and pencil to check.) • For example, if the card is a red 9, which has a value of -9, the player says • 8 - (-9) = (+17) • The next player takes the top card from his or her pile, subtracts it from the previous answer and gives the new answer. • For example, if the card is a black 2, which has a value of +2, the player says • 17 - 2 = 15. • The game continues until someone shows a card that, when subtracted results in a an answer of exactly 25. That person collects all the cards that have been played. • The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins.

  18. SUMMARY: Write three to four sentences that answer the essential questions- How can you compare and contrast addition and subtraction of integers? Why do you think that we can model subtraction of integers as adding the additive inverse of the second integer? Homework: Word problem handout. Write a number sentence to solve each word problem. Show all steps.
