  1. Lodi High School Social StudiesBlended Class Pilot Report to the Lodi Unified School District Board of Education March 5, 2013

  2. Background • The Board approved the addition of general social studies courses that meet high school graduation requirements but not A-G requirements. • Lodi High School suggested a blended class approach in which CP and general course students would receive instruction in the same class. • The Board approved the model for all schools as a pilot program.

  3. Rationale for Blended Model • Class size • Class sizes would not be lowered for general classes • The number of students needing additional support can be kept at manageable numbers in each blended class • Instructional Materials • Lack of funds to purchase different text books and ancillary materials for general classes

  4. Rationale for Blended Model • Opportunity for peers to serve as role models in relation to study skills

  5. Placement in General Course of Studywithin the Blended Class • Students making an effort but still struggling • Special Education students based on recommendation from special education teacher • English Learners based on recommendation from English Language Arts teacher • Parent request

  6. Placement Timeline • All changes are made after quarters 1 and 3 • Allows students to see what placement works best for them • Some students will see that they are succeeding in CP and decide to stay (with input from counselor and parents) • Allows students who may have been overlooked to be found

  7. Grading Scale • Teachers developed a grading scale that reflects a differentiation in grading procedures for CP and General Course students.

  8. Communication to Students in General Course of Study • Placement does not guarantee a passing grade. • General course of study does not meet prerequisite needed for student to attend a four year university directly after high school graduation.
