Conditional Statements • Real Conditional = probable situations • If you do X, then Y will happen • simple present + simple future • “Unless” = if…do not… • If you use this toothpaste, you will get fewer cavities. • The deal will fall through unless we make some changes. • You will get a promotion if we win this court case.

  6. Conditional Statements • Practice • Think of 5 real conditionals from your work or home life. • Tell them to a partner. • Can you figure out the “unreal conditional” structure? • If I had more money, I would buy a house in Palo Alto.

  7. Example • To persuade • To persuade the audience to purchase a portable, sealed coffee mug. • You should purchase a mug from the Stanford bookstore

  8. Attention • Do you love coffee? • 7/10 business leaders say “yes” • or • What’s your favorite drink? (ethos) • Latte, cappuccino, plain black coffee?

  9. Need • Situations • The “no time for coffee” • The “spilled cup”
