Historical Significance • Ghosts were put into two categories: souls of the dead and demons. • Ghosts that were of the dead returned for specific purposes while demonic ghosts only returned to torment the living. • Many could tell the difference because when they said the Lord's name, the demon would vanish.

  3. Historical Significance Continued • During Shakespeare's time, there was a strong belief in ghosts, and many times they were incorporated into Shakespeare's plays as an insight into the character's mind. • In English Renaissance theatre, ghosts would either wear old every day clothes, or an armoured suit, to give a sense of antiquity since the armoured suit was outdated by then.

  4. Myths • Many people during Shakespearean time believed in and feared supernatural beings, blaming them for everything that went wrong. Many blamed ghosts since they couldn't rest, and thought that they had come back to seek revenge.

  5. Myths • There is a European story about a ghost returning to beg a woman to free him of his marriage proposal, since he had died. If she refused, it would result in his eternal damnation. This reflects a popular belief that ghosts would haunt their lovers if they had found a new love without some type of formal release from their deceased one.

  6. Symbolism • In a lot of Shakespeare's literature, a ghost would appear as a guilty conscience of the character after a murder, or something that shouldn't have been done.

  7. Quote from Macbeth "It will have blood, they say. Blood will have blood. Stones have been known to move, and trees to speak. Augurs and understood relations have. By magot pies and choughs and rooks brought forth. The secret’st man of blood."

  8. Meaning of Quote In this quote, shakespeare is saying that the dead will have their revenge, and that ghosts will do something to expose the guilty people who committed their murder somehow. He is referring to Banquo, because Macbeth had him killed and now he is the only one seeing him at dinner, causing him to get scared and yell out to the ghost that only he sees.
