Introduction • In 1 Jn 3:1-10 John speaks of the test of righteousness • In verses 11-24 he is going to speak of the test of love • John regards love as an obvious test and declares the whole message of the life and character of Christ is a message of love • These verses point out the Christian’s whole duty is summed up in the obligation to exercise love

  3. Love is to be manifested toward one another (1 Jn 3:11-18) • This love is a natural result of our “Sonship” but is also commanded (1 Jn 3:11-13) • Hate, envy, and jealousy have no part in the Christian’s life. • Cain is used as an example (vs 12) • Those motivated by hater are still spiritually dead, they have not truly been born of God and are not His children (vs 14) • A lack of love is an indication of one who is still dead in sin

Love is to be manifested toward one another (1 Jn 3:11-18) • This love is a testimony of a Christian being buried in baptism and becoming a new creature • The words “we know” in vs 14 are placed for emphasis • This in contrast to those in the world who have not been born again • The words “passed from” in vs 14 mean to pass over from one place into another; to migrate out of death into life • Verses 14, 16, and 18 give a positive affirmation of love • The Christians love is not manifested words alone, but in deeds…It is a willingness to surrender that which has value in one’s own life to enrich the life of another (vs 14, 18) and is shown in daily living • Verse 17 points out the negative…if one closes his heart to the needs of others, he does not have God’s love abiding in him

The Christian’s assurance is seen in a free conscience (1 Jn 3:19-24) • The conditions of a free conscience are to believe in Him (v 23), love one another, and abide in Him • Belief in Christ is the summary of all of His commandments (Mk 12:28-31) • To believe in the name of Christ is to believe in all that He is • Christians abide in God and God in them through the Holy Spirit (Jn 14:10, 17:21, 23) • Believers remain in Him only as they imitate the example of Christ • This action can be seen in their loyalty in following the gospel

The Christian’s assurance is seen in a free conscience (1 Jn 3:19-24) • The conscience is fee because the Lord frees it…this is a contrast to the believer’s own freedom (v 20-21) • Humans in their own weakness will condemn themselves • To condemn means to know something against • We know our failures, and they rise up to condemn us • One of our most serious challenges is doubt in the heart • The good news is our own hearts are not the final judge (1 Cor 4:4-5) • When sin is confessed and forgiveness requested, The Lord removes it and no longer holds it against us • He is greater than the human heart and when He forgives, we have assurance in Him

The Christian’s assurance is seen in a free conscience (1 Jn 3:19-24) • When the conscience is free, the Christian can be assured of answered prayer (v 22) • There are no limitations to the power of prayer, but the one praying must completely surrender to the will of God (Mk 11:24, Lk 11:9) • The answer may not always be in the way expected, but it will be best

Conclusion • A lack of assurance can lead to insecurity in our lives • Uncertainty with God can be one of man’s greatest frustrations • Follow the words of this passage, believe in Him, abide in Him, pray in Him, and love Him and then you can have assurance • Assurance of being His child • Assurance of being forgiven • Assurance of a free conscience
