  1. Welcome to 2nd-5th Grade Common Core Training Educational Services

  2. Overview of the Common Core Standards EDUCATIONAL SERVICES PATRICIA LOPEZ DEBBY CRUZ DR. FELICIA DURDEN ANTONIA ADAMS-CLEMENT

  3. Agenda for Today Purpose: • Develop an awareness of the Common Core Standards, aka 2010 Standards • Understand the need for increased text complexity • Access resources by completing the Math Treasure Hunt and CCR Overview

  4. Icebreaker

  5. Notebook Review • ELA Standards • Math Standards • ELA Resources • Math Resources

  6. Overview of Modules • Cluster 1: Reading Research, Text Complexity, Treasure Hunt and CCR Overview • Cluster 2: Mathematics and the 2010 Standards • Cluster 3: Literacy and the 2010 Standards

  7. Common Core State Standards Initiative • Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) • National Governors Association for Best Practices • ACT • College Board • Achieve

  8. 2010 Standards: General Information • Arizona State Board of Education adopted the Common Core Standards in June 2010 • Common Core Standards are now known as 2010 Standards by Arizona

  9. Criteria for CCSS • Fewer (focused), clearer, and higher • Alignment with college and career expectations • Inclusion of rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order thinking • Consideration of strengths of and lessons learned from current state standards • Internationally benchmarked, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society • Research Based

  10. Tab Pages (ELA Anchor Standards) • Reading – page 10 • Writing – page 18 • Speaking & Listening – page 22 • Language – page 25 • Appendix A – after first green page in first section (ELA Resources) • Math Resources – pages 6-8

  11. Text Complexity

  12. Text Complexity Research supports the need for increased Text Complexity in kindergarten through 12th grade [Appendix A of your notebook has sample research.] Activity: Find Appendix A page 2 & 3 • Take a moment to read the Introduction • Jigsaw at your table: “What Text Matters”; “College, Careers, and Citizenship”; “K-12 Schooling”; and “The Consequences: Too Many Students Reading at Too Low a Level” • Share at your table, discuss & create a chart.

  13. Increasing Text Complexity increases Rigor through the following Genres:Stories and literaturePoetryInformational texts

  14. Text Complexity– Easy Explanation • Increase demands on knowledge, structure and vocabulary • Increase Lexile level (new Lexile) • Leverage on background knowledge, student motivation, interests and higher level tasks/activities.

  15. Text Complexity

  16. 2010 CCR Standards (ELA)

  17. Features of the English Language Arts • Architecture (Format) • Coding

  18. Coding for English Language Arts Standards K.RL.3a Standard 3a Grade K Strand: Reading Standards for Literature

  19. Format of ELA Standards Strand Reading Standards for Literature Kindergartners: RL Key Ideas and Details • 1. With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. • 2. With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details. • With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story. Standard Craft and Structure • Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text. • Recognize common types of texts (e.g., storybooks, poems). • With prompting and support, name the author and illustrator of a story and define the role of each in telling a story. Cluster

  20. ELA Strands • Reading • RL – Reading Standards for Literature • RI – Reading Standards for Informational Text • RF – Reading Standards: Foundational Skills (K-5) • RH – Reading Standards for Literacy in History / Social Studies (6-12) • RST- Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects (6-12) • Writing • W-Writing Standards • WHST – Writing Standards for Literacy in History/ Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (6-12) • Speaking and Listening (SL –Speaking and Listening Standards) • Language (L-Language Standards)

  21. Three Appendices • A. Research and Evidence; Glossary of Key Terms • B. Reading Text Exemplars; Sample Performance Tasks • C. Annotated Student Writing Samples

  22. English Language Arts • Grade levels for K-8; Grade bands for 9-10 and 11-12 • Each strand is organized by College Career Readiness Anchor Standards • Integrated Model of Literacy • Research and media skills blended into the standards • Balance of literature & informational text

  23. DeconstructingCollege and Career Anchor Standards

  24. Deconstructing the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards

  25. Deconstructing the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards At your table “deconstruct” your assigned CCR cluster.

  26. Deconstructing the 2010 Arizona English Language Arts Standards • Rotate and Review • Groups will rotate and review the charts by Cluster. • Look for giant leaps and smooth transitions between the grade levels. • What about rigor?

  27. 2010 Math Standards

  28. Features of the MathematicsCommon Core Standards • Architecture (Format) • Coding

  29. Coding for Mathematics Standards 7.EE.2 Standard 2 Grade 7 Domain: Expressions and Equations

  30. Format of Mathematics Standards Domain (Topic) Grade Level Standard Cluster

  31. Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them • Reason abstractly and quantitatively • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others • Model with mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically • Attend to precision • Look for and make use of structure • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  32. Mathematical Practices Connections

  33. Key Ideas in Mathematics • K-5: Focus on number and operations • K-7: Graded ramp up to algebra, through fractions, ratios, and proportional reasoning • 6-8: Rich hands-on work with ratios, geometry, statistics, and probability • High School: Rigorous algebra, geometry, modeling, statistics and probability • Emphasis throughout on problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, and modeling

  34. TREASURE HUNT • Work independently for 10 minutes to find the answers. • Work with your table for 10 minutes to find the answers. • Be ready to share

  35. Standards Implementation Successful Implementation is Key • Implementation and buy-in is a long- term process: • Awareness (Familiarity) - 2010-11 • Understanding – 2010-2011 (Kindergarten - 1 must begin full implementation in 2011-2012) • Understanding (Familiarity) 2012-2013(2nd – 5th grade) Partial Implementation • Full Implementation at ALL grade levels (2013-2014) • Assessment begins 2014-2015

  36. Review Agenda • Develop an awareness of the Common Core Standards, aka 2010 Standards • Understand the need for increased text complexity • Access resources by completing the Math Treasure Hunt and CCR Overview

  37. Closing & Questions • Thank you for your attention • Please complete the evaluation form
