  1. Sedimentation and Macro-Invertebrate Species Identification By:Tim KuzanAndy OslerKelly FarrensAndy WhelchelMichelle Bryntesen

  2. Objectives Methods and Materials Results Discussion Outline

  3. Determine if the lake is bottomless Determine the water content within the KB-Core samples Determine presence/absence of Macro-invertebrate species Objectives

  4. Methods • Determine if the lake is “Bottomless” • 2” PVC Pipe

  5. Using a KB-Core sampler we took 3 samples within the Lake (2” diameter, 20” length) Shoreline Between shoreline and middle of Lake Middle of Lake Methods

  6. Ekman samples (15cm x 15 cm) • Samples (3 at each section) • Shoreline • In-between shoreline and middle • Middle of Lake • Sieved each sample • 9 total samples were taken Methods

  7. Core samples • Top 10 cm (2cm intervals) • Every 5cm after top 10cm were analyzed. • 32 total samples over 3 cores • Wet weight • Dry weight(60oC, 24hrs) • Ash weight(550oC, 3hrs) • Ekman Samples • Used dissection microscope to identify species. • All 9 samples were analyzed. Lab Analysis

  8. Bottom was found approximately 6’ below the sediment water interface at the shoreline. Results

  9. Results Blue= Organic weight Red= Mineral weight

  10. Ekman samples • Shoreline: • An abundance of snail shells, clam shells, caddis fly casings • Between shoreline and middle of lake: • Few snail shells, few clam shells, chironomid larvae • Middle of lake: • chironomid larvae, dragonfly larvae, tubifex worms Results

  11. Causes for low macro-invertebrate populations • Bull heads • Oxygen Concentration • Sediment had high organic matter • Allochthonous • Possibly indicates the lake age Discussion
