  1. Taiga Biome By: Georgia West Janelle Astorga Ramos Katterine A. Valencia & Melanie Lopez-Monzon

  2. Where taiga is found on Earth • Taiga is the Russian word for forest and is the largest biome in the world. It stretches over Eurasia and North America. The taiga is located near the top of the world, just below the tundra biome.

  3. What will you learn • First of all you will learn some vocabulary that will help you understand this presentation more clearly • What is the difference between Taiga and similar biomes • What makes Taiga more unique • The animals and plants that live in the biomes • What is the impact that this Biome has, What would happen without it

  4. Vocabulary • Biome- a complex biotic community characterized by distinctive plant and animal species and maintained under the climatic conditions of the region, esp. such a community that has developed to climax. • Evergreen- An evergreen is a type of tree that does not loose its leaves during the winter and it stays green all year, but once every 3-4 years it will grow in some new leaves. • Taiga- The coniferous evergreen forests of subarctic lands, covering vast areas of northern North America and Eurasia.

  5. Differences What is the difference between a Taiga and a normal forest? Well you are about to find out The ONLY difference between the other forests is that it can become deathly cold. Russia has recorded temps of -90 Fahrenheit but also 90 Fahrenheit. The summers are short, only 50 -100 days of frost free days, spring and fall are hardy noticeable because of how cold it gets, but despite the freezing temperatures animals and strong plants still survive there.

  6. Plants • On to the plants you will learn of the plants that live in the taiga biome. • There are ten plants in total that lives in the taiga biome only four will be shown.

  7. Black Spruce • The Black Spruce is a tree that lives in the Biome of Taiga. • It can grow up to 25 meters long • The Black Spruce has sharp needles with four sides on them • As the tree gets older the crown of the tree gets more and more like a spike. • The needles are blue-green, short, and pointy • They are usually a half an inch long • The bark of the tree is gray-brown • The branches are short and are usually layered.

  8. Paper Birch • Paper birch trees have a thin bark that peels in horizontal layers that separates into sheets, almost like paper • here are many different types of birch trees and they all grow very tall • paper birch can grow anywhere from sixty to eighty feet high

  9. White Poplar • Poplars do not live very long • It’s illegal to plant poplars along streets in some cities because they clog underground drainpipes and sewers • Poplar wood is light whitish/brownish in color • Its soft, light, and very weak • The white poplar has leaves that are silvery white, and the bark on the branches are white • They also have three to five • Poplars grow better in moist places

  10. Eastern Red Cedar • The eastern red cedar can grow up to 10-50 ft long • Its name is misleading since it is a juniper and not a cedar • They can grow in any type of soil, and will take over abandoned fields and fence rows • Eastern Red Cedars prefer full sun and seedlings don't grow well in forests

  11. Animals • Now you will start to learn about the living things that live there such as animals. • Different animals means different lives because not each animal that lives in the taiga biome is shown. There are eleven in total.

  12. The Grizzly Bear This is the grizzly bear and is one of animals that lives in our taiga environment The grizzly bear hibernates during the winter because there not that much food in the winter to hunt for

  13. The Bobcat The taiga is a home to the bobcat because it has swaps, and forest that they adapt to The bobcat runs up to 30 mph but it prefers to walk

  14. Canadian Lynx The lynx mainly hunts snowshoe hares, but also eats meadow voles, small deer, caribou and sheep. The lynx lives deep in the coniferous forest and mountains of Canada and the northern United States. It can be found scattered through Europe, across northern Asia and Siberia.

  15. Grey wolf • Gray wolves can survive in many biomes as long as food is plentiful and the climate is relatively cold. • The gray wolf's large paws have fleshy pads and claws for traction and can spread to provide better support in snow.

  16. What makes the taiga so unique? • This biome is unique because it is the largest biome in the world. • It stretches over Asia, Europe and Canada. • The weather in the summer is hot and cold in winters.

  17. What does “taiga” mean? • Taiga is a Russian word. • What it means is evergreen forest. • It also means “marshy pine forest”.

  18. Taiga • This biome is one of the most fragile biomes. • Only specialized animals can survive in its weather. • This is do because of its cold weather and it’s northern location. • It would take centuries for trees to grow back if for any reason they would get destroyed.

  19. Where is the taiga located? • It is located between 50 degrees north and 60 degrees. • The length of the growing season in boreal forests is 130 days. • Current extensive logging in boreal forests may soon cause their disappearance.

  20. TaigaFacts • The taiga has one of the oldest trees in the world. • This tree is a 4,600 year-old bristlecone tree. • The taiga has a temperature average that is below freezing. • These temperatures are only for six months a year.
