  4. Divine Investiture • "Divine investiture is defined as that condition in which --in all His dealings with the human family Jesus the Son has represented and yet represents Elohim His Father in power and authority. ... Thus. .. Jesus Christ spoke and ministered and through the Father's name; and so far as power, authority and Godship is concerned His words and acts were and are those of the Father." --Neal A. Maxwell

  5. Jesus – Names and Titles • Father • Christ (Greek): Anointed One • Messiah (Heb): Anointed One • The Word (John 1; cf Moses 1) • The Light and Redeemer • The Spirit of Truth • Only Begotten • Firstborn • Divine Son of God --what does this mean?

  6. Doctrine of Divine Sonship(Matt. 1:18-20; Luke 1:26-35; John 10:17-18) Matt 1:18-20  18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.  19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.   20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. • John 10: 17-18 17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. 18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father. He is mortal and immortal

  7. Doctrine of Divine Sonship(Matt. 1:18-20; Luke 1:26-35; John 10:17-18) Luke 1:26-35 26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

  8. Jesus’ Biological Mother? Mary Mortal Inherits the power of death “I have power to lay it down” Jesus’ Biological Father? God the Father Immortal Inherits the power of resurrection “I have power to take it again” Doctrine of Divine Sonship(Matt. 1:18-20; Luke 1:26-35; John 10:17-18)

  9. Doctrine of Divine Sonship: Why do we need Christ? I have heard some people complain that if Jesus was God as well as man, then His sufferings and death lose all value in their eyes, "because it must have been so easy for him." Others may (very rightly) rebuke the ingratitude and ungraciousness of this objection; what staggers me is the misunderstanding it betrays. In one sense, of course, those who make it are right. They have even understated their own case.

  10. Doctrine of Divine Sonship: Why do we need Christ? The perfect submission, the perfect suffering, the perfect death were ... possible only because He was God. But surely that is a very odd reason for not accepting them?. . . If I am drowning in a rapid river a man who still has one foot on the bank may give me a hand -which saves my life. Ought I to shout back (between my gasps) "No it's not fair! You have an advantage! You're keeping one foot on the bank”?

  11. Doctrine of Divine Sonship: Why do we need Christ? That advantage--call it "unfair” if you like--is the only reason why he can be of any use to me. To what will you look for help if you will not look to that which is stronger than yourself? C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, 61

  12. Doctrine of Divine Sonship: How did being mortal and immortal help Him in His mission on this earth?

  13. Doctrine of Divine Sonship For those few moments in the eternal spectrum called mortality the Savior yielded to the mortal plight; he submitted to the inhumanity of man; his body longed for sleep; he hungered; he felt the pains of sickness. He was in all respects subject to every mortal failing experienced by the human family. Not once did he raise the shield of godhood in order to soften the blows. Not once did he don the bulletproof vest of divinity.

  14. Doctrine of Divine Sonship That he also had godly powers did not make his suffering any less excruciating, any less poignant, or any less real. To the contrary, it is for this very reason that his suffering was more, not less, than his mortal counterparts could experience. He took upon him infinite suffering, but chose to defend with only mortal faculties, with but one exception…

  15. Doctrine of Divine Sonship …his godhood was summoned to hold off unconsciousness and death that would otherwise overpower a mere mortal when he reached his threshold of pain. For the Savior, however, there would be no such relief. His divinity would be called upon, not to immunize him from pain, but to enlarge the receptacle that would hold it. He simply brought a larger cup to hold the bitter drink. Tad R. Callister, The Infinite Atonement, 119 How do we use the atonement to help us become like God? sinner >> sinless >> sanctified >> perfect

  16. Sinless vs. Perfect Going from sinner >> sinless >> perfect • What does it mean to be sinless? • For us, it is the justification of our sins at baptism and sacrament • What does it mean to be perfect?

  17. Our goal of Exaltation… • Matthew 5:48 • aBe ye therefore bperfect, even as your cFather which is in heaven is dperfect. • 48aJST Matt. 5: 50 Ye are therefore commanded to be perfect . . . • bGR complete, finished, fully developed. • D&C 67: 13.   13 Ye are not able to abide the presence of God now, neither the ministering of angels; wherefore, continue in patience until ye are perfected.

  18. D&C 93:11-14 When Jesus lay in the manger, a helpless infant, He knew not that He was the Son of God, and that formerly He created the earth. When the edict of Herod was issued, He knew nothing of it; He had not power to save Himself; and His father and mother had to take Him and fly into Egypt to preserve Him from the effects of that edict.

  19. D&C 93:11-14 Well, He grew up to manhood, and during His progress it was revealed unto Him who He was, and for what purpose He was in the world. The glory and power He possessed before He came into the world was made known unto Him. Lorenzo Snow, Conference Report, Apr. 1901, 3

  20. “Teach of Me” • How have you learned about teaching based on what was taught tonight?

  21. Christ learned how to learn, so how can we do it? • 2 Timothy 3:14-17   -- SCRIPTURES!! 14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
