  2. -Travis was born in August of 1809 in Saluda County, South Carolina. It is unknown if he was born on the 9th or 1st. • - Travis was the eldest of eleven brothers and sisters. • - All his siblings were born from Mark and Jemma Travis. Family lived in Mine Creek near the Red Bank community when he was born. • - At the age of nine, he moved with his family to the town of Sparta in Conecuh County, Alabama, where he received much of his education. He later enrolled in a school in nearby Claiborne, where, at twenty years old, he eventually worked as an assistant teacher. • - He is red haired, blue eyed, and light skinned. Early Life

  3. Travis Married Rosetta Cato and had one son (Charles) and one daughter (Susan). He abandoned them due to the fact of believing his wife cheated and his child was not his. • - Before the Texas Revolution he had jobs as a lawyer, soldier in the Alabama militia, receiving a commission as Adjutant in January, 1830, and an assistant school teacher. adulthood

  4. -When Texas and Mexico started having problems, Travis was one of the first to join the Texas army. When Mexican General Martin Perfecto de Cos demanded the surrender of the Texan's cannon that resulted in the Battle of Gonzales, Travis was one of hundreds to come to its defense. Unfortunately, he arrived too late for the action. • -With orders from Henry Smith in January of 1836, Travis entered the Alamo with about 30 men. Within a few days, he was in command, when the former leader, James C. Neill, left to take care of his family, and Bowie being too sick to take his role. • -Travis commanded the Texas defenders during the Siege and Battle of the Alamo. Although a few reinforcements arrived before the Alamo fell, Travis and over 180 defenders gave their lives for Texas independence on 6 March 1836. Texas revolution

  5. William Travis died at the Alamo in 1836 on March 6th. He took a bullet to the head defending the Alamo. • He was only 26 at the time of his death, but he was an idol to many after showing such courage and heroism. Final years
