  2. Birth • Traviswas most likely born on August 9, 1809. • He was born in Saluda County, South Carolina (also the home of James Butler Bonham who joined in defending the Alamo).

  3. Family • William Travis was born to Mark and Jemima Travis. • Mark and Jemima had 11 children of which William was the oldest. • The Travis family lived on their family farm.

  4. Childhood • Worked on the family farm • Attended church • Father taught him how to catch and ride wild horses, hunt and fish • Liked to read as well as play with his younger siblings • Moved to Alabama at age 9 • Family helped found Sparta and Evergreen communities

Education and Career Before Alamo • Home schooled as a young boy • Attended an academy in Sparta until he learned all that was taught • Uncle enrolled him in a school in Claiborne, Alabama • Assisted in instruction of younger students • Apprentice to leading attorney in Claiborne • Became an attorney • Published newspaper called the Claiborne Herald

  6. Marriage • Married one of his former students, 16 year old Rosanna Cato,in 1828 • Son Charles Travis was born on August 8, 1829 • Left his wife after only a year of marriage

  7. Early Military Experience • No previous military experience before joining Texas Army in early 1830’s • In his first battle, he assisted the rebels in defending San Antonio de Valero from 4,000 Mexican soldiers. • After meeting success, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the Texan forces for his leadership.

  8. Alamo • Governor Henry Smith ordered Travis to recruit men to assist forces in San Antonio. • Travis led the efforts to reinforce the fortress known as the Alamo. Walls were strengthened, cannons were mounted, barriers were raised, and supplies were stored. • Travis is best remembered for writing the “Commandancy of the Alamo” on February 24, 1836, wherein he appealed to fellow citizens and compatriots to come to the aid of his fellow soldiers. • The battle of the Alamo was a bloody battle in which many Texans lost their lives.

  9. Alamo (continued) • Travis and the other commanding officials did the best they could to keep the Mexicans suppressed, but their efforts ended fruitlessly. • Travis was one of the first to fall after the Mexican Army breached the fortress. • He died on March 6, 1836.

  10. Description • As a grown man, Travisstood around 6 feet tall and weighed about 170-180 pounds, had dark curly red hair, brown eyes, and pale white skin. • He was well-disciplined and was said to be very cooperative. • Travis was an excellent military strategist and an overall patriot.
