  5. Cyber Neighborhood The Internet is a virtual neighborhood. Almost anything you can do in the real world, you can do in the “cyber” neighborhood. It used to be that you needed to know where your kids were and who they hung out with, now you need to know that AND where they go on the internet and who they talk to.

Online Victimization of Youth: A Report on the Nation’s Youth (1999)source: Dr. David Finkelhor, Crimes Against Children Research Center Surveyed 1,501 children, ages 10-17 : • 1 in 5 were sexually solicited online • 1 in 4 encountered some type of pornography • 1 in 33 were aggressively solicited by mail, telephone, or attempts to meet

Online Victimization of Youth: Seven Years Later (2006)source: Janis Wolak, Kimberly Mitchell, and David Finkelhor of the Crimes Against Children Research Center University of New Hampshire Surveyed 1,500 children, ages 10-17: • 1 in 7 were sexually solicited online • 1 in 3 exposed to sexual material • 1 in 11 were threatened or had other offensive behavior directed at them

  8. 2006 Survey Findings About Aggressive Solicitation • 75% of solicitors asked to meet youth in person • 34% called youth on the telephone • 18% came to the youth’s home • 12% gave youth money, gifts, and other items • 9% sent offline mail to youth • 3% bought travel tickets for youth

  9. Online Victimization Survey Continued… • The majority of solicitation took place in Chat Rooms and Instant Messages. • Less than 10% were reported to Law Enforcement, Schools, ISPs, or a Hotline. • Teenage girls are most at risk. • Predators are non-stereotypical.

  10. 2006 NCMEC Report vs. 2005 • Child Pornography (possession/distribution): 62,480 3% Decline • Child Prostitution: 1,098 - 99% INCREASE • Child Sex Tourism: 566 - 180% INCREASE • Child Sexual Molestation: 2,156 - 31% INCREASE • Misleading Domain Name: 2,101 - 150% INCREASE • Online Enticement of Children for Sexual Acts: 6,384 • 139% INCREASE • Unsolicited Obscene Material Sent to a Child: 1,799 • 194% INCREASE • Total: 76,584 – 8% INCREASE

Warning Signs • Excessive Online use. • Unsupervised time in chat rooms. • Drastic behavior or attitude changes • Downloading large graphical files (P2P) • PHOTO FILES: .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .bmt, .tif • MOVIE FILES: .mpg, .avi, .wmv, .mpeg • Receiving gifts or phone calls from adults you don’t know. • Face to Face meetings.

  12. Why do Predator’s use the Internet • Thousands of potential victims. • Lack of parental supervision. • Predators can network with other Predators. • Amount of personal information in profiles. • Predators believe they can remain anonymous.

  13. Why Are Profiles So Dangerous? • Easy to search for “key words” to find a specific type of person. • Most children post pictures of themselves. • Personal information • Full name • Date of birth • Address • Interests • Other biographical information

  15. www.myspace.com • Myspace.com is a very popular place on the Internet where people network, send messages to one another, post pictures of themselves and others, and make cyber-friends. • A few users of Myspace have been involved in incidents recently involving luring or enticement of minors. Myspace has also been used for cyberbullying, cyberstalking and harassment.

  21. Hey! There’s Danny. Surprise! His myspace page never mentioned that he is a level 3, high-risk sex offender.

  22. Keep your home computer in a common area. Be aware of other computers that your child may use. (School, Library, Friend’s house) Activate the logging features on your computer Know the common features of your computer and the software on your computer. Parents must be the primary screen name for the computer. Parents must keep a record of your child’s screen names and passwords. Parents must monitor their child’s profiles. Child’s screen names should be non-descriptive. Steps you can take to protect your children online
