  1. Authoress: Harper Lee • Born April 28, 1926 in Alabama • Studied law at University of Alabama, did not finish but valued the experience

Lee left Alabama and travelled to New York City and wrote in time off from working as an airline reservation clerk • Eventually she quit her job and moved into a cheap, drab apartment and concentrated on writing. • Her first attempt in 1957 of publishing To Kill a Mockingbird was criticized as too episodic and not cohesive enough to be a novel.

The book was finally published in 1960 after Lee took 30 months to revise the book. • The book received instant critical acclaim and spent many months as a best seller • Awards: 1961 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, the literary award from the Alabama Library Association, and the Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

  4. Today • The book has been translated into 10 languages and segments often appear in anthologies. • Why so successful? Important, well stated themes about prejudice, justice, and human dignity. • Lee drew on her own experiences as a child to create the character of Scout.

  5. Themes in To Kill a Mockingbird • Prejudice, Maturity, Friendship, Status, and Sacrifice • Each group will have one of the above terms assigned to their table. You must brainstorm as many possible words associated with the themes. (10 mins) • We will discuss this as a class then you will have the novel assigned to you.
