  1. A Simple Overview of Dust Storm Research Cai Huaqing National Center for Atmospheric Research Boulder, Colorado

  2. Why Study Dust Storm ? • Climate impacts (radiative properties of dust particles) • Environmental impacts (puluted particles interact with dust particles) • Social impacts (visibility associated transportation hazards)

  3. Dust Storm Research Areas • Observational (collecting samples, analyzing their physical characteristics, chemical composition and radiative properties) • Modeling (studying dust transportation using various models) • Statistical (trying to find correlations between dust storm frequency and large scale environmental conditions such as winds, soil moisture, vegetation, precipitation, and cyclone activity)

  4. Contries Where Dust Storm Research is Fairly Active • China • Japan • The United States • Korea • India • Russia

  5. MWR, July 1921 Extraordinary Dust Storm in North Dakota By L. P. Dove and Others

  6. ACE-ASIAAsia Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment • A large international field experiment and use of transport modeling has yielded physical, chemical, and radiative properties of the abundant aerosols originating from Asia (J. H. Seinfeld, 2004, BAMS) • A lot of papers were published using the data from this field project

  7. The Sea-viewing Wild Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) Image for 7 Apr 2001 Dust Storm (Seinfeld, 2004, BAMS)

  8. Dust Emissions Fluxes and AVHRR Fire Counts Over the Period 1-20 Apr 2001(Seinfeld, 2004, BAMS)

  9. Lidar Detection and CFORS Model Simulation of Dust Storms (Seinfeld, 2004, BAMS)

  10. NCAR C-130 Chemical Measurements(Seinfeld, 2004, BAMS)

  11. Boat Measurements and CFORS Model(Seinfeld, 2004, BAMS)

  12. Radiative Forcing Calculated TOA and surface radiative forcing during 5–15 Apr 2001 over east Asia (20°–50°N, 100°–150°E). Forcing (W m2) Surface Atmosphere TOA Dust -9.3 3.8 -5.5 Sulfate -3.6 0.3 -3.3 Organic carbon -3.9 1.7 -2.2 Black carbon -4.1 4.5 0.4 Sea salt -0.4 0.0 -0.4 Internal mixture -2.2 3.5 1.3 Thermal IR 3.0 -2.3 0.7 Total forcing (clear sky) -20.5 11.5 -9.0 Total forcing (with clouds) -14.0 11.0 -3.0

  13. Summary • Dust storm is important to study, and chinese scientists have played a very important role in this area based on publications in AGU and AMS journals • There are still lots of questions need to be anwsered in this area, so research opportunities should be plenty
