  3. Camp Creek Elementary Mission Statement • Opportunities for all students to pursue academic knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary for continued academic success and responsible citizenship • A calm, orderly school environment that facilitates the learning process

  4. Literacy BlockReading and Grammar • Use big books, leveled readers, anthology stories, and popular children’s literature • Short vowels, long vowels, blends and more! • Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and Pronouns • Sentence structure • Punctuation • Common Core aligned AKS supported with technology

  5. First Grade Math • Concepts repeated throughout the year, mastery not expected at first • Games and Math Lab support the AKS • Math supported by technology (Classworks, Education City, etc.) • Time, money, measuring, adding, subtracting, number sense, shapes…

  6. Writing • Writing is a developmental process • Writer’s Workshop includes mini lessons, conferencing with teacher, and sharing • Types of Writing: Narrative, Response to Literature, Persuasive, and Informative • Writing grades include quick writes, letters, journals, and formal writing

  7. Word Study/Spelling • Encourage letter and sound relationships • Writing the sounds they hear in words • Assessed by dictation tests, handwriting, and spelling • Begin spelling first 35 most frequently spelled words • Weekly spelling lists and word families • First grade child is still developing! You can help your child master these skills by helping them see patterns in the word endings and creating examples at home.

Social Studies & Science • Social Studies AKS: • Famous Americans, Maps and Globes, Symbols of America, Folktales, Citizenship, and more • Science AKS: • Shadows, Magnets, Plants, Animals, Sounds, Weather, Water Cycle, Natural Resources, and more • Scholastic News supports instruction • Social Studies and Science “Specials”

Health • Health AKS: • Personal and school safety, healthy lifestyle, nutrition, getting along with others, feelings, 5 senses and more! • Health taught by classroom teacher, nurse, physical education teachers, and counselor • Participation grade • Extra credit project to earn an E • (One project per quarter)

  10. Important Information • Daily Schedule/ Rotation Schedule • Homework Policy • Conduct and Discipline- Friday Folders • Reading Log • Snack every day- please no drinks except water

  11. Personal Items to Remain at Home • All Trading Cards (Baseball, Yugioh, Pokemon, etc.) • Toys • Stuffed Animals • Fragrances • Lipgloss • Electronics • Sports Equipment

  12. School/Home Communication • Friday Folders go home on Friday! • Look for important communication inside • Review tests and other graded papers • Teacher comments and conduct checklist • Initial and return on Monday or the next school day • Weekly Paws, Class newsletter • www.Campcreekschool.com and our class website • Calls, written notes and email Lauren_chappell@gwinnett.k12.ga.us

  13. Parent Conferences Early Release Days Students released at 12:50 Fall Conferences September 25-26 Spring Conferences February 26-27

  14. Absences • Students must be in classroom by 8:50 a.m. • A note must accompany your child upon return stating reason for absence. • Excused absences are only for illness or death in the family. • Students may obtain missed work upon return to school.

  15. Transportation Safety • Please have your child ride the bus • Written permission is required for a change in transportation or • Call school office before 2:00 p.m. if transportation is changing that day • Please check students out through the office. We cannot dismiss them to you from the classroom. • Last checkout of the day is 2:30 p.m.

  16. Standardized Testing Cognitive Abilities Test – COGAT September 16, 17, and 18, 2013 County Interim Tests August 2013, October 2013, December 2013, and March 2014

  17. Birthdays • Birthdays are special! • If possible please bring and pass out at lunch • Send individual treats not needing to be cut OR Support school ...buy ice cream for $1.00 to be enjoyed at lunch! • No party favors • No drinks • No personal party invitations may be passed out at school

  18. Ice Cream/Cafeteria • Ice Cream sales ($1.00) begin September 3 • Communicate with your child about purchasing • You may request extra food/drinks be blocked from their lunch account • Call Mrs. McDonald in the cafeteria with questions • Breakfast and Lunch Menus are on the school website Ice Cream sales help support our school programs!
