  1. Dual-Polarization Operations Assessment Dual-Polarization Basic Principles

  2. Base Data Terminology • Base Moments • Z, V, & SW • Dual Pol Base Variables • CC, ZDR, KDP • Difference due to calculation method

  3. What is Dual-Polarization? • Transmit and receive horizontally (H) and vertically (V) polarized beams • How to do this to WSR-88D without building a new radar?

  4. Dual-Pol Sensitivity Loss • How to transmit both H and V signal? • Transmitted pulse is split into H and V channels

  5. Dual-Pol Sensitivity Loss • Splitting power in half results in 3 dB loss 10 log (0.5) ≈ - 3 dB • Splitting transmitted power means 3 dB loss in returned power • Returned power may fall below noise • But wait, there’s more…

  6. Dual-Pol Sensitivity Loss • A bit more loss from hardware that does the splitting • Cabling, built-in test equipment, etc. • Per site expected sensitivity loss due to Dual-Pol conversion 3.5 – 4 dB

  7. RDA Changes • Hardware mounted on back of antenna! • Be kind to your techs… • RDA signal processer changes to generate Dual Pol variables

  8. RPG Changes • Dual Pol Base Products • ZDR, CC, KDP • Dual Pol algorithms and Derived Products • Hydrometeor class, melting layer, and estimate rainfall RPG PPS EPRE MLDA Rate HCA Accumulation Adjustment QPE PPS Rainfall Products QPE Rainfall Products

  9. What Dual Pol Does Not Change • Basic WSR-88D characteristics • Frequency, beamwidth, data resolution • VCP sampling • Elevations, update time, number of pulses per radial • Same Pre-Dual Pol products and algorithms You control how and when you integrate Dual Pol information into your methodology

  10. Dual Pol Still Under Development! • Meet KOUN • Formerly in research configuration • Dual pol research based on Oklahoma weather! • WSR-88D baseline Spring 2009 • Upgraded to WSR-88D Dual-Pol Fall 2009 • Dual Pol data analysis since Winter 2009/2010

  11. Dual Pol Still Under Development! • What you’ll see on KOUN: • Changes in clutter filtering configuration • ZDR values underestimated (by a fixed amount!) • RF not assigned in Batch • Things that have been beyond our control…

  12. Thank You • You are an important part of this process
