  5. THE NAPOLEONIC CODE • Religious tolerance • Abolition of serfdom & Feudalism • Property rights protected carefully • Interests of employers were safeguarded by outlawing trade unions & Strikes • Equality for all citizens under the law • Right of the individual to chose a profession

  6. RUSSIA: THE BIG DISASTER • June 1812 ~ Russia invaded by six hundred thousand men under Napoleon • Russia retreats for hundreds of miles ~ burning villages and ruining food supply • GREAT RETREAT from Moscow ~ Napoleon retreated to Poland in January 1813 with forty thousand

  7. Napoleon: EXILED • European States rose up against Napoleon • Paris was captured by the rebels in March 1814 • Napoleon was exiled to Elba

  8. HE’S BACK… • The new king, Louis XVIII comes to power • Weak monarchy • Napoleon sneaks back into France • Napoleon came to Paris in triumph on March 20, 1815
