  3. A Brief History • Officially inaugurated on 21st Dec. 1908 as the “National University”. • Around 12,500 full time faculty members. • Around 250,000 students. • 20 faculties, 5 research-oriented institutes. • Informally ranked the top State university in Egypt.

  5. Top research areas • Agriculture. • Engineering. • Medicine. • Oncology (treatment of cancer). • Pharmaceuticals. • ICT.

  6. Innovation • Innovation = invention + exploitation model. • To go to exploitation you need idea development. • For idea development and exploitation you need a business/ economic model.

  7. Possibilities • Medicinal use of plants. • New strains of low-water usage crops & these that cope with a higher degree of salinity. • New materials (e.g. 3M). • New drugs (Virus-C, Avian flu), • Wireless networking protocols.

  8. Proposed topics • Agriculture & water management: Product/ process. • Building performance (energy conservation & pollution management): Product/ process. • Materials (solar cells, heat & dust resistant materials etc.): Product. • Efficient waste recycling: Process. • Nutrition: Product/ process. • Rural health: Process/ paradigm. • Mobile applications: Product/paradigm.

  9. Intensification • Search (generation of ideas & alternatives). • Select (which alternative to invest in). • Implement. • Capture. IPR & patent issues

  10. Example: Helping inventors Title: Lined Balloon Mounted Stent. Merits: Replaces a high risk surgical operation (pulmonary artery banding and many others) with a lower cost, much lower risk interventional procedure. Current status: Obtained European patent, Japanese patent. Type of support required: Recognition of the position of patents in relation to research papers (awards, promotions). Marketing to possible investors or manufacturing companies, or at least: Preparation of the file of related EU grants. Implement, capture support.

  11. 2nd Example A new type of effective & easy to use contraceptive. Issue: inventor does not trust local patent office staff! Needs help with registering the patent outside Egypt. Cost is high. Hard to decide on in whose name the patent should be. Implement, capture support.

  12. What can the university do? • Provide training: how does innovation happen at the individual & small group level? • Provide networking spaces: industry liaison, alumni. • Help spread awareness among staff and students: how innovation happens, possible curricular support, etc.

  13. Activities • Train innovation champions. • Spread awareness/ advocare of importance of formal industry liaison and alumni relationships.

  14. Conclusions • Top areas identified. • Possible mapping into innovation space. • Institutional support & awareness spreading.
