  2. Violence Violence is the threatened or actual use of physical force or power to harm another person or to damage property School violence includes bullying, sexual harassment, and gangs

  3. What is Bullying? Aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions Involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time Involves an imbalance of power, dominance, or strength

  4. A person is bullied when he or she is exposed repeatedly to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself/herself.

  5. Teasing vs. Bullying Teasing usually occurs among friends Everyone involved seems to be having fun with no harm intended There is no physical or emotional abuse occurring

  6. About 30% of U.S. teens have been involved in bullying • Physical bullying is more common among boys • Verbal and emotional bullying is more common among girls

Types of Bullying Verbal bullying including name calling Bullying through social exclusion or isolation Physical bullying like hitting and kicking Bullying through lies and rumors Taking money or property from others Threatening or forcing students to do things Racial bullying Sexual bullying Cyber bullying via cell phones or internet

  8. Types of Direct Bullying Verbal bullying including name calling and derogatory comments Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking, and shoving Money and things taken or damaged Threatening or forcing someone to do something

  18. Power of Bystanders Most experts believe that bystanders can be the most powerful group in reducing bullying Students who witness bullying need to do something

  19. Eliminate Bullying Do not participate in bullying Stand up for yourself or victims being bullied Tell an adult who can help

  20. Keep School Safe Refuse to carry weapons Report any violent acts or threats Settle disputes peacefully Resist negative peer pressure Choose friends carefully Avoid people who exhibit violent behavior Tell an adult if you fear your safety
