EXTINCT OR EXTANT

EXTINCT:A species that has died out, with no living individuals left. Extinction is forever.Some examples of Extinct animals are Dinosaurs, Saber-toothed Cats, and Mammoths. A Mass Extinction is when large numbers of species go Extinct at the same time, like the sudden disappearance of most Dinosaurs. .

    1. EXTINCT OR EXTANT?

    2. EXTINCT: A species that has died out, with no living individuals left. Extinction is forever. Some examples of Extinct animals are Dinosaurs, Saber-toothed Cats, and Mammoths. A Mass Extinction is when large numbers of species go Extinct at the same time, like the sudden disappearance of most Dinosaurs.

    3. EXTANT: A species that is alive today. Every living animal you can think of would be considered Extant.

    4. Endangered Species: An Extant species with the possibility of becoming Extinct in the near future. Endangered Species include Eastern Wolves, Blue Whales, and Manatees.

    5. Critically Endangered: An Extant species with a high probability of becoming Extinct in the near future. A species with less than 1,000 surviving individuals in the wild would be Critically Endangered. Some Critically Endangered Species include the Golden Frog, Florida Panther, and Siberian Tiger.

    6. What can cause Extinction? Overhunting Excessively killing a species for food, fur, etc Introduced Predators or Competitors Introduced species can devastate native species Natural Disasters Meteor, volcanic eruption, tsunami Habitat Destruction Removal or pollution of a critical habitat Disease Widespread outbreak of a deadly disease Climate Change Loss of particular zones of temperature and rainfall

    7. How many species do you think exist on Earth today? There are about 1.8 million named species, but there may be as many as 10 times that many yet to be discovered. How many do you think are Endangered? There are at least 8,000 Endangered Species in the World. Critically Endangered? Of 8,000 Endangered Species, over 3,000 are considered Critically Endangered.

    8. EXTINCT OR EXTANT ? Write your name at the top of your paper. We will discuss some different cases of Extinct and Endangered species as a class. then you will record the name of each species, whether it is EXTINCT or EXTANT, and the causes.

    9. American Cheetah EXTINCT Disappeared about 13,000 years ago, around the same time that early humans after the first people arrived in North America.

    11. Mountain Tapir EXTANT Critically Endangered Found only in a narrow band of forest in the Andes mountains in Colombia and Ecuador

    13. Whooping Crane EXTANT There were on 16 Whooping Crane left in 1941, but thanks to captive breeding there are now over 250 in the wild. There are over 80 Whooping Cranes in Florida.

    14. West African Black Rhino EXTINCT In 2000, only 10 West African Black Rhinos were left, and in 2006 none could be found in the wild. They were wiped out by poachers who cut off and sold their horns as expensive medicine.

Kauai Oo EXTINCT http://www.arkive.org/species/GES/birds/Moho_braccatus/Moho_braccatus_00.html?movietype=qtMed This Hawaiian bird was last seen in 1985, and was driven to extinction by non-native rats brought by people to Hawaii, and diseases carried by non-native mosquitoes also brought in by people.

    16. Jamaican Iguana EXTANT Critically Endangered: This species was considered extinct since 1948, until a small population was discovered in 1990. Today there are around 50 Jamaican Iguanas, and there is now a captive breeding program.
