History Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 (GI Bill of Rights) Education, Home Loan and unemployment benefits Created massive growth in suburbs to absorb new housing construction Opened up higher education to the masses Revamped in 1984 Allowed minority veterans access to funds and move the Civil Rights movement forward

  4. Eligible Training and Educational Programs College, Business, Technical or Vocational school On-the-Job Training and Apprentice programs Licenses and Certifications Correspondence courses Flight training National Tests

Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty(Chapter 30) Provides up to 36 months of education benefits Entered Active Duty after June 1985 High school diploma or equivalent Honorable discharge or still on Active Duty At least 2 years of active duty w/$1200 contribution Current full time monthly benefit is $1,101 for veterans and only tuition and fees for active duty service members Benefit must be used within 10 years of discharge Department of Defense “Kicker or College Fund”

Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment Program (Chapter 31) • Eligibility is 12 years from the latter of date of separation or notification of service connected disability rating • Entitlement is established if veteran is within 12 year window, has a 20% or greater service connected disability and an employment handicap • An individualized rehabilitation plan is written with resources and criteria to measure success and agreed to by the veteran • Payments are made directly to the school • Monthly full-time subsistence allowance minimum is $520 and increased for each additional dependent

Survivors’ & Dependents’ EducationalAssistance (Chapter 35) Provides up to 45 months of benefits to eligible spouses & children Deceased or permanently & totally disabled veterans as a result of active service; Prisoner of war or Missing in action Spouses have 10 years to use benefit from determination date set by the VA; If death occurred on active duty spouse have 20 years Children are eligible between 18-26 Current full time rate is $881

Montgomery GI BillSelected Reserve (Chapter 1606) Provides up to 36 months of benefits for service in the selected reserves Enlisted for 6 years after June 1985 Completed initial entry training High school diploma or GED Good standing in a drilling Selected Reserve unit 10-14 years to use benefit Current full time rate is $317 Selected Reserve kicker of $100-$350

Reserve Educational AssistanceProgram (REAP) (Chapter 1607) Provides up to 36 months of benefits for members of the reserve components ordered to active duty in response to war or national emergency as declared by the President or congress Cannot be used with other VA education benefits Eligible if served for more than 90 consecutive days on active duty on or after 9/11/2001 Maximum full time rate is $880 Selected Reserve kicker of $100-$350
