  1. Introduction to GIS Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Roane State Community College Presented By: J. Mark Young Roane State Community College Summer Semester 2006

  2. What is GIS? • G - Geographic • I - Information • S - Systems

  3. Why Use GIS? • Because much of our work is inherently spatial in nature • Because we deal with a wide variety of complex issues in many disciplines conducive to modeling • Because we frequently create information well-suited to storage in databases • Because we make frequent use of maps and mapping

  49. Learning GIS Program Focus Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Roane State Community College The intent and focus of the program is to give the students a firm foundation in the concepts and principles of GIS, such as understanding map projections, scale, topology, database concepts and spatial analysis techniques. Students learn to design, develop, complete and present GIS projects at a professional level. Students are also educated in problem solving techniques.

  50. Learning GIS Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Roane State Community College Technical Certificate Program Approved by the TN Board of Regents and Established in 1996
