April Showers Bring… • Puritans Start a crusade to PURIFY the Anglican Church Meanwhile… • The Pilgrims become one of the first Separatist Groups to escape the Religious Persecution of England • The Pilgrims become immigrants leaving England for Holland and then North America • Over 100 men women and children would leave For North America on the Mayflower

Bring Mayflowers • The Pilgrims sign the Mayflower Compact to establish basic laws, self government, and Majority rule • As the Pilgrims try to establish Plymouth, over half the pilgrims die the first winter • Through the help of Native Americans like Samoset and Tisquantum the pilgrims learned how to better farm the land • The cooperation between the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians would become Known as the First Thanksgiving

Teamwork makes the Dream Work • Pilgrims struggled to farm fish and hunt for fur due to the land restrictions • Families made New England Stronger as settlers learned to read and write and used religion to guide their communities • Women, Men and Children all did jobs to help make England a success • Women would contribute to the Pilgrim society and would gain more rights than they did in England

Puritan At Heart • Another Separatist group, the Puritans, leave England for North America to escape the Church of England • During the Great Migration 40,000 Puritans come to New England • Puritans, Under John Winthrop, came to New England well prepared and thrived • Puritans would set up a Commonwealth where people worked for the good of the group

The FUN of Government • Commonwealths In New England had to obey English Laws but would be run by congregations in town meetings and choose the general court and governor • The Government would be an example of Self Government as each congregation would send representatives to the TWO house government • The Government of the Puritans was religious based but non church members could join the government under the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut

The Rhode to Religious Freedom • Roger Williams opposed the Church’s power in the Government and the taking of native American lands and sets up Rhode Island • Anne Hutchinson was also forced to leave Massachusetts for challenging the concept of priests and leaves for Rhode Island • In Salem, the dangers of a Church Controlled government spotlighted how innocent people could die in the name of Religion

Big Losses • Harsh Winters and rocky soil led to less farming and less slaves in New England • Trade would become more powerful in New England as merchants set up shops to sell goods • Fishing and Whaling become HUGE industries in New England as we begin to “Farm the Sea” • To Accommodate the need for Fishing Boats, Shipbuilding became a staple of the New England Economy

  10. You’re Fired • Skilled Craftspeople became important to the New England Economy • Apprentices would work with their master craftsperson until they were ready to start their career on their own • Apprentices would become journeymen and finally master craftspeople

  11. We Don’t need no education • Education becomes more important as families want their children to learn the Bible • While most children stopped their education after the Second Grade New Englanders were most likely to move on to higher education • Colleges like Harvard and William and Mary were founded to improve education in the colonies • By the 1700’s, over 70% of the New England Population could read and write
