  2. Exam will be on Friday, June 24 • Exam will be all Essay • Midterm Exam 1 covers Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4 and class discussions. • Review PowerPoint slides for each chapter and connect slides to materials in each chapter and lecture notes.

  3. Chapter 1: • Understand the characteristics of organizations • Know the relationship of efficiency and effectiveness to management, pp. 5-6, and be able to explain why efficiency may be overemphasized over effectiveness • Know the managerial tasks/functions, pp. 7-12 • Know the managerial roles • Be able to identify and explain the managerial skills, pp. 13-16 • Understand competitive advantage and its four building blocks, pp. 19-21

Chapter 2: • Know the Big Five personality traits, pp. 43-48. • Understand the relationship to management of Locus of Control, Self-Esteem, and Needs for Achievement, Affiliation, and Power, pp. 48-49. • Understand the importance to management of the two attitudes “job satisfaction” and “organizational commitment,” pp. 51-54. • Be able to explain emotional intelligence, pp. 57-58 • Be able to explain organizational culture, its importance, and factors that transmit organizational culture.

Chapter 3: • Understand the concept of Ethical Dilemmas, p. 79. • Know very well the relationship between Stakeholders and Ethics, pp. 82-87. • Know the rules for Ethical Decision Making, pp. 87-89. • Understand the effects of Ethical and Unethical Behavior, pp. 90-91. • Know the sources of an organization’s ethics, pp. 92-96. • Understand the types of Diversity and its implications for management, including legal considerations, pp. 97-105. • Know the types of sexual harassment and the implications for management, pp. 109-111.

  6. Chapter 4: • Know VERY WELL the differences and components of the Task Environment and the General Environment • Understand and be able to apply Hofstede’s model of national culture

Preparation for Oral Part of the Exam • Know and be able to explain the lessons for doing management from the Small Group Breakout Exercise: Opening a New Restaurant, p. 28 • Be able to explain the organizational culture in your college and its sources • Be able to apply the Big Five Personality Traits to explain the actions of Bob Iger at Disney. • Be familiar with and able to apply the results of the class discussion on the Towson University Student Academic Integrity Policy and its relevance for ethics in the workplace. (Review the questions on p. 4 of the syllabus) • Understand the impact on organizations and the society-at-large of the higher enrollment of women than men in college and graduate schools based on the class discussion of the video clip “60 Minutes—Boys
