  2. The Internet The Internet is a global network of computers; the number of computers linked to this network is unknown because not one individual or organization is in control of it. The Internet is structured around ISP’S (Internet Service Providers), in New Zealand we have Xtra, Clear, Wave, Paradise, and many more providers nationally and internationally, these companies control Internet traffic flow. The World Wide Web is made up of millions and millions of Web pages, incorporating all the different types of multimedia, a Web Browser allows you to view these pages, such as Internet Explorer, Safari, and Netscape Navigator. Each Web page has its own web address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator), which through the address bar allows you to go to the desired site.

  4. The Intranet An Intranet is a network of computers within a school, business, or organization that allows users, e.g. students or employees, to find, use and share documents and files. The network is connected to a File Server where information is stored; this also allows you to connect to the outside world, such as E-mail and the Internet. The Intranet sits behind what is called a Firewall, which acts like a wall around your data to protect your data from the outside world trying to get in and use and abuse your system. All of your files and folders are stored on one of these servers, an advantage of this is that you do not have to sit at the same computer or even be in the same class to access your files.

  6. File Management File management is very important, how many times have you tried to find that very important essay or some homework and just cannot find it anywhere. The chances are you have saved it to somewhere on your hard drive where you will never find it, or have left it untitled, or have used a not so useful title for your document. By simply organising your own documents folder into a logical order you can save yourself the time and headaches in the future. Note: You will be assessed on your File Management at each level.

  7. Setting up Folders Locate Folder in Finder (e.g. jo_bloggs > Documents Create ICT Folder by holding down Shift +  + ‘n’ Double-Click on ICT Folder Create 4 new Folders, and name Excel, Internet, PowerPoint and Word. Inside each of those folders create 3 new Folders Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
