  2. Wilfred Edward Salter Owen, 1893 - 1918 • born Oswestry, Shropshire. Educated at Birkenhead Institute and Shrewsbury Technical College. • deeply attached to his mother to whom most of his 664 letters are addressed. (She saved every one.) • a committed Christian • 1913 to 1915 he worked as a language tutor in France. 

  3. he escaped bullets until the last week of the war • at Craiglockhart, the psychiatric hospital in Edinburgh, he met Siegfried Sassoon who inspired him to develop his war poetry • on 4th November he was shot and killed near the village of Ors • he felt pressured to become a soldier • within a week he had been transported to the front line • this was a profound shock for him-he saw war for what it truly was-horrific

Simile Definition:  • Similes are one of the most commonly used literary devices; drawing parallels or comparisons between two unrelated and dissimilar things, people, beings, places and concepts. By using similes a greater degree of meaning and understanding is attached to an otherwise simple sentence. The reader is able to better understand the sentiment the author wishes to convey.
