    1. Luc Demeulenaere, Procter & Gamble Art Smith, ECCC/VICS Facilitated by Accenture, Alex Morris Robson May 15, 2001 Key Messages: Welcome from Luc Demeulenare. ‘On behalf of GCI and the working group, I’d like to welcome you today to the Global Product Classification Project.’ Introduce Art Smith and state he will be there Thursday Introduce Alex Morris Robson facilitating the project from September to January 2001 This has been a very exciting project with many firsts: 1. The industry has been working on tying to find a global solution for x years, this is the first time that we have a global solution 2. The first time that retailers and manufacturers have worked together on a global solution - an important development in the ECR context 3. The first time that some of the solution providers have sat down round a table with each other to work through a global solution This is a complex area, with many stakeholders, it will take us time to work through the issues, but we are communicating here today some very important first steps.Key Messages: Welcome from Luc Demeulenare. ‘On behalf of GCI and the working group, I’d like to welcome you today to the Global Product Classification Project.’ Introduce Art Smith and state he will be there Thursday Introduce Alex Morris Robson facilitating the project from September to January 2001 This has been a very exciting project with many firsts: 1. 2. Project Objectives Key Messages: We worked with user group to define the objectives. This project is USER DRIVEN. Globally adaptable: the solution must be a global solution to meet the requirements of each of YOU - national solution providers as well as individual companies Flexible: the solution must be able to map to each of YOUR individual classification schemes, and today we are going to introduce to you the BRICK or common entry point into a classification schema as a solution to this. Phased: We have started with Food and Beverage segment, and will next move onto Apparel, Indirect, OTC Pharmaceutical and general merchandise Why are we doing this ?: The users need a common product classification structure for item set up, authorisation, search and query and maintenance. Remember the project is driven by your business needs…... Key Messages: We worked with user group to define the objectives. This project is USER DRIVEN. 3. Working Group Key Messages: I would like to introduce Alex Morris Robson, a Partner in Consumer Goods with Accenture, who will describe the facilitated project process and findings before handing back to me. Thank you Luc. As Luc said my name is Alex Morris Robson and I’m a Partner in Consumer Goods at Accenture. Accenture are involved in standards initiatives in this area across many industries. We are seeing how global standards are making a real impact in other industries such as in oil and gas and have been delighted to facilitate this project for your industry. We have had a large user working group of with over 150 members from a variety of retailers, manufacturers and solution providers; many of you are here today. We have had a core team of the 4 exchanges and key solution providers and we would like to thank them for their hard work on the project. We have continued to work closely with UCC EAN throughout the process. If your company name is not on the list and you would like to be involved, then please contact Sabine Ritter at GCI who can involve you in the next stage. 4. Collaborative e-Room Enabled Process Key Messages: How did the process work ? Step 1: We gained input on required changes to existing product classification structures from the working group through an e-Room . An eRoom is a virtual room on the GCI website. We also had some key open monthly meetings in : Paris, Windsor, Chicago and New York. Step 2: We had Accenture review these inputs and review existing schema. For example, MOVE FORWARD A SLIDE Accenture defined a straw man finding the common entry point between the schema This was then reviewed by the working group and the solution providers before being signed off by GCI Step 3: Is the publication of the Solution Schema by GCIKey Messages: How did the process work ? 5. Common Entry Point to Existing Classification Schema Key Messages: Many of you will recognize these schema. We have here an example from IRI/Nielsen, from UDEX, IFLS, and from UNSPSC and we representing GCI would like to thank all of these organisations for their help in submitting their schema into the GCI Product Classification Project. Their help has been invaluable. In IRI/Nielsen we have the category bread, in UDEX the category bread, in IFLS, the family bread and in UNSPSC, the commodity bread. By defining a BRICK Bread, we can find a common entry point to each of these structures. The key point is that the GCI solution defines a common entry point that can map to any of these solutions. 6. The Schema Solution Key Messages: I’m going to tell you at a high level about the solution. The Schema Solution has three parts: A Brick or common entry point, such as bread A series of Attributes, such as Variant or type. Other examples could be colour, size A series of Values, which define that attribute. For example, loaf or roll is a variant of bread. These definitions have been completed to a first stage in the Food and Bev. segmentKey Messages: I’m going to tell you at a high level about the solution. The Schema Solution has three parts: A Brick or common entry point, such as bread A series of Attributes, such as Variant or type. 7. Schema Solution has 129 Entry Level Bricks Key Messages: By March, we had completed the first stage for Food and Bev. We now have the bricks for Food and Bev. And the associated attributes, and values. There Bricks have been agreed by the major solution providers such as IRI, Nielsen, UDEX, IFLS as well as UCC/EAN. However, we recognise that there is still a lot of work to do and I will now hand back to Luc who will describe some of the next steps. 9. Classification Application Key Messages: Where next ? We need to continue to work with the GCI GDAS team to align the solutions with the GTIN definitions as they come out We know there are too many attributes to make this truly globally workable. We need to define a clear set of core attributes that you can all use as the base point. We need to make it clear that other attributes are optional attributes. We need to define the product attributes between global, global/local and local to make them work in different environments and conditions We need even more clarity around definitions and coding numbers and for this we need to work with the GDAS team. 10. Integration Key Messages: Luc, think that we may need a clearer way of saying this slide for such a large audience.Key Messages: Luc, think that we may need a clearer way of saying this slide for such a large audience.

    11. Next Steps and Governance Key Messages: Where next ? As many of you know, the Food and Bev first stage was completed in January and approved by GCI in March. Since then, we have been focusing on resolving some larger issues about governance. Many of you raised the issue of Governance at the New York meeting We now have some clarity on these issues and can move forward. Go through points on slide Key Messages: Where next ?
