Each piece of information will blame a different party for the Titanic sinking You (and your partner) will have to design a poster showing who was to blame for the Titanic sinking and why You cannot use any words inside your box on your sheet of paper

  5. Each group will be given a primary source of information. Each source will blame a different party for the sinking You will be given 8 minutes to put that information onto a piece of A3 paper You cannot have any words on the sheet of paper only diagrams BUT you are allowed numbers

  6. The Market Place In each group there will be one seller and 3 buyers The seller should stay at their table. The buyers should take their blank table to ALL the sellers and try to gain as much information about the sinking of the Titanic The buyers can ask as many questions as they like about the pictures and the sellers should try to give the buyers as much information as they can about their source You have 10 minutes

Evidence 1 Captain Smith was due to retire after the Titanic’s first voyage in 1912. 7 different ships gave him ice warnings but he ignored them, I think it was because he wanted to finish his career getting to New York in record time. Despite travelling near ice bergs the ship was still travelling at 20 knots an hour (close to it’s top speed). If the ship was going slower it would’ve been able to swerve out of the iceberg’s way in time. However, Captain Smith had been assured of the Titanic’s unsinkable nature and didn’t believe that an iceberg could sink it.

  8. Evidence 2 Thomas Andrews designed the ship. He designed it so that there were 16 watertight compartments in the hull and as many as four could be sank before the ship sank. However, Mr Andrews reduced the height of the compartments to make more space for the first class rooms. If two of the compartments had reached up to the top of the ship maybe the ship wouldn’t have sank at all!!

  9. Evidence 3 Most of the Titanic was built at Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. The shipbuilders used about 3 million rivets (screws) to hold he ship together. These rivets were made of poor quality iron . When the ship hit the iceberg the rivets broke off and the ship came apart. Also the steel used on the ship became brittle (snapped easily) in extremely cold conditions such as those on the 14 April 1912. I think if better quality materials had been used the ship would never have sank.

  10. Evidence 4 The White Star Line were the company who owned the Titanic. Bruce Ismay was the man in charge of this company. I heard Bruce Ismay arguing with Captain Smith on the 13 April 1912 that he should go faster as he wanted the Titanic to get to New York in record time.

  11. Evidence 5 Thomas Andrews originally designed the Titanic to have 32 lifeboats. However, The White Star Line Company ordered that this be reduced to 20 so that they could have more room for first class passengers. The finished ship only had lifeboats for 1178 people of the 2206 on board,

  12. Evidence 6 I was a member of the crew on the Californian a nearby ship. At 11.15pm the radio operator went to bed. After midnight I saw fireworks coming from the Titanic. I went to wake up the Captain, Captain Lord to tell him in case they were in trouble. He said they would just be having a party and went back to sleep. If Captain Lord had just turned on the radio or investigated the flares in the sky then we might have been able to help!!
