  2. How has being born in the room effected Jack? • Jack suffered child abuse from when he was born until he was 5 • His mom breast fed him until a little bit after he got out of the room • Jack had to learn a lot of new things because he’s never experienced them before. For example: he didn’t know how to walk up and down stairs since they’re aren’t stairs in the room. • A girl Genie was bottled up in one dimly lit room until she was 12, the only contact she had was with her abusive father (James) • When Genie entered the Children’s Hospital at 14 she was still in diapers, was the size of an 8 year old, and had the language and motor skills of a baby (James) • Throughout her entire life she was never able to master grammatical structure (James) • Jack was not in conditions that bad, thanks to Ma but he was still effected by being socially confined

  3. What effect does long-term confinement have on a person? • Jack and Ma are like prisoners • Social isolation can be as torturous as any physical abuse (Gouwens) • Causes mental illnesses like, depression, anxiety, and you can even start to hallucinate (Frintner) • After being confined for a long amount of time you can begin to lose the ability to initiate behavior, your brain needs a certain amount of “quantity, quality, or type of stimuli to regulate thought processes and other brain functions properly” (Frintner) • Prisoners in solitary confinement are effected so drastically that they need to be prepared ahead of time to reenter society (Gouwens), like Jack and Ma. • Jack and Ma had to wear sunglasses because they weren’t used to the sun, they had trouble talking to other people, especially Jack and it was really overwhelming.

  4. Effects of solitary confinement continued: • People need interactions with others to stay sane. (Frintner) • Jack saved Ma by even being born. If he wasn’t born she most likely would have gone completely crazy with no social interaction with anybody except for Old Nick who came in at night to rape her and give her a small amount of food every Sunday • When someone else controls every aspect of your life it affects their mind greatly and people start to lash out (Frintner)

  5. This book is realistic because: • Many people around the world are abducted every day • Elizabeth Smart was missing for 9 years until they found her a few miles from home (Johnson and Christenson) • Like Ma, Elizabeth was not far from home at all but no one could find her • Officers who studied Elizabeth’s case figured out that she formed a bond with her kidnapper, which is called Stockholm syndrome. She had chances to escape and didn’t. (Johnson and Christenson) • This is like Jack because unlike Ma he loved Room and he didn’t want to leave. After Jack and Ma got out he made him and Ma go back because of how much he missed it.

  6. What makes Jack a hero? • Went through many challenges to get him and Ma out of the room • “Scared is what you're feeling. Brave is what you're doing.” (Donoghue) • Jack went to a place that he’s never even heard of trying to escape a guy that would not be afraid to kill him all to do what his mom wanted.

  7. What makes Ma a hero? • She raised Jack as well as she could while having very little toys, clothes, and food • She survived living in a single room with no windows, was able to overcome the effects of solitary confinement and sexual abuse all for Jack • Ma taught Jack how to read and she played games with him almost every hour of every day

  8. Why do you think Ma waited so long before telling Jack the truth and trying to get out? • She thought Jack would be able to enjoy his life as best as he could by not knowing what he was missing • In The Allegory of the Cave, Plato says that if you spend your whole life in a cave and see a shadow of a book you will think the shadow is the book. (Plato) • In Room, the room Jack and Ma live in is like their cave • Jack watches TV but he thinks everything on TV could never be real because all he’s seen is the room. • Once you find out there’s an outside world everything changes (Plato) • Jack had a hard time dealing with it when he got out of the room because everything was so different and he didn’t like it
