Instructor Training Workshop – Concept Briefing Agenda Concept: Workshop will begin with introductions and then Participants will then be broken down into 3 groups and will conduct the Critical Thinking exercise as an ice breaker. After group activities, all will break for lunch and return. Upon return, all will collectively gather for an AAR. Who: All Instructors, Course Managers, and Division Chiefs What: Instructor Training Workshop focused on improving the quality of instruction within CATC When: 10October 2013 Where: Bldgs 378/ 355 Concept: Provide an active learning forum for instructors to collaborate and discuss best practices Key Speakers: LTC Bergosh MSG Ryder Mr. Place (Introduction) Instructors: Mr. Livingston(Instructor Evaluation) SFC Patterson(Snowball Exercise) SFC Curnell (Roles and Responsibilities) Participants: Instructors and course managers

  4. Instructor Training Workshop – Warm up Exercise • The warm up is a critical thinking exercise designed to encourage Instructors think “outside of the box”. • The exercise is given as a short but incomplete story. • Instructors are asked to figure out the logical conclusion of the story but are only allowed to ask closed (yes or no) questions. • The event will be timed, time will start at the conclusion of the story and time will stop when the group has arrived at the correct conclusion. • During the AAR at the conclusion of all classes, the Facilitators will compare the times.

  5. Instructor Training Workshop – Discussion Group 1 • Instructor Evaluations • This will be conducted/facilitated by Mr. Livingston • The focus of the discussion will be “What Instructor evaluators are looking for during evaluations” • Facilitator will review the Performance Evaluation Checklist (PEC) sheet • Facilitator will clarify any questions or issues from the Instructors

  6. Instructor Training Workshop – Discussion Group 2 • Roles and Responsibilities of an Instructor • This will be conducted/facilitated by SFC Curnell • The focus of the discussion will be “What are the duties and responsibility of Instructors” • Facilitator will review the Roles and Responsibilities as per TRADOC 350-70 • Facilitator will clarify any questions or issues from the Instructors

  7. Instructor Training Workshop – Discussion Group 3 • “Snowball Exercise” • This will be conducted/facilitated by SFC Patterson • Instructors will be seated in opposing rows and given a sheet of paper and a pencil. • The Instructors will be advised to write any significant issue relevant to instructing in CATC on the paper, and then wad the paper. • The Instructors will then simultaneously throw the wadded paper over their shoulders. • The Instructors on the opposing sides will then collect the thrown paper. • The Facilitator will have Instructors read papers aloud and then facilitate a discussion on each issue if merited. • Upon completion the facilitator will collect all papers and make note of any trends
