  2. The Allies Meet & Debate • Paris Peace Conference began on January 18, 1919 @ the Palace of Versailles in Paris, France • Conference lasted for 1 year • Delegates from 32 countries were invited—Germany was NOT

  3. The Big Four • Woodrow Wilson (USA), Georges Clemenceau (France), David Lloyd George (Britain) and Vittorio Orlando (Italy)

  4. Fourteen Points • President Wilson his Fourteen Points: outlined his plan for peace • Guiding behind these points was… • Self-determination: allowing people to decide for themselves under what government they wished to live • 14th point: “general association of nations”—(beginning of League of Nations)

  5. Treaty of Versailles • Compromise between aims of France, Britain & USA • Created the League of Nations: international association whose goal would be to keep peace among nations • Included a “war guilt” clause which blamed & punished Germany for the war

  6. Germany’s Outcome • Had to pay reparations to the Allies ($33 billion over 3 years) • Territories in Africa and the Pacific were seized—lost a lot of European land • Stripped them of military power

  7. A Troubled Treaty • “A peace built on quicksand”, the Treaty of Versailles did little to build lasting peace • German people were greatly angered • Set the stage for WWII!!!
