  1. Using HR Charter Shaping Your Chart Using Form Style

  2. This is a PowerPoint presentation of about five minutes duration. It will explain how to shape your chart to improve its appearance and make it easier to understand the reporting relationships. You may exit the presentation at any time simply by closing the Window. Where this arrow appears, click on it to advance the slides.

  3. Default Form Style We have configured HR Charter to display charts in a standard way, but you may override this setting any time you wish. Our default setting displays the first level ‘Flat’. Positions subordinate to the first level are displayed in a style called ‘Right Centre Feathered’. The next slide provides an illustration.

  5. Squeezing the chart onto a page Users must accept the fact that it may be impossible to display the entire organization on a single page of letter sized paper! There is no single magic form style for every chart. Each organization has a different “shape”, as defined by the number of levels, the span of control of each supervisor, and the number of subordinates reporting to each supervisor.

  6. Optional Form Styles Changing the form style of your chart can improve its appearance and make it easier to view the structure and reporting relationships. Altering the form style can also reduce the number of pages required to print out your chart.

  7. ‘Flat’ Form Style This style is suitable for the second level in a chart, especially if a third level of subordinates is to be displayed.

  8. ‘Overlapped’ Form Style This style is suitable for two-level charts where there are many subordinates and where page width is at a premium.

  9. ‘Feathered’ Form Style Left Right This style helps to reduce the width of the chart on screen or on paper.

  10. ‘Centre Feathered’ Form Style Left Right This style is the best for minimizing chart width.

  11. ‘Tree’ Form Style This style is good for two-level charts but is not as effective as the centre-feathered style for minimizing page or screen width.

  12. ‘Open/Enclosed List’ Form Style Open Enclosed This style is good for clustering teams of positions.

  14. Applying a Form Style 1. Select (right click) the supervisor. 2. Select thedirect subordinates. Form style is normally applied to the subordinates of a position.

  15. Applying a Form Style Click ‘Tree’ to apply that form style… When the subordinates have been selected (highlighted)… …apply the desired form style.

  16. Applying a Form Style This cluster of subordinates has been changed to the ‘Tree’ form style.
