The Slovak language today • in Slovak: slovenský jazyk, slovenčina • the official language of the Slovak Republic • member of the Indo-European languages, it is one of the Slavic languages • related languages: Czech and Polish • Latin letters • three dialects: West- Slovakian, Middle-Slovakian and East-Slovakian

Where do Slovak people live? • the Slovak language is spoken by more than 6 million people worldwide • Slovakia : about 5million • the USA : about 1million • the Czech Republic : about 350,000 • Hungary : about 80,000 • Canada: about 100,000 • Serbia: about 60,000 • Romania : about 18,000 • + Austria , Ukraine , Croatia , Poland, South America

  4. Slavic languages • West Slavic languages : Polish, Czech, Slovak, Kashubian, Sorbian • South Slavic languages : Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Slovenian, Montenegrin, Macedonian, Bulgarian • East Slavic languages : Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Ruthenian

Russian, Romanian, French, Czech, English Examples: Words from Hungarian : betyár- beťár, kocsi- koč, deres- dereš, sátor- šiator, áldomás- oldomáš, kolbász- klobása Words from English : jazz- džez, job- džob, leader- líder , team- tím, speaker- spíker, playback- plejbek, meeting- míting, fanclub- fanklub, disc jockey - disdžokej
