  1. 49.2 Reading Notes 1. What was LBJ’s vision for a better society? Lyndon Johnson wanted to expand the power of government to improve the quality of life for Americans. 2. Why did conservative Barry Goldwater disagree with Johnson? Barry Goldwater believed government should be limited and should not regulate every aspect of people’s lives.

The largest part of his Great Society. 10. Economic Opportunity Act- • August 1964. Dozens of federal antipoverty programs. Office of Econ. Op. to oversee. Job Corps, Head Start, VISTA & HUD

  5. Ch 49.3 Reading Notes • Why was LBJ successful in getting laws passed in Congress? • He had served in Congress and used his legislative experience well as president. • Johnson was very persuasive. • He used a technique called “the treatment” to get his way.

  6. LBJ’s Great Society Program or Act Description of Program Created numerous anti-poverty programs, such as Job Corps, Head Start, and VISTA. Also created the Office of Economic Op. 3.   9. Ch 49.3 Notes 4. What were the chief criticisms of LBJ’s programs? • Critics on theleft (Democrats) argued that poverty resulted from forces beyond the control of the poor. • They believed Johnson should have provided money for the poor while creating more jobs
