WELCOMEPARENTS • While You Are Waiting... • Read your child’s “All About Me” • Fill out the following paperwork: • EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING • RELEASE OF STUDENT INFORMATION • PARENT AND STUDENT HANDBOOK • (This must be handed in before leaving tonight). MRS. MORRIS’ FIRST GRADE CLASS SEPTEMBER 16, 2010

  2. What is Our Typical Day Like? • Unpack and Morning Routines: Students are responsible for unpacking their backpacks and emptying their Homework Folders. There is a special bin for homework, important notes, and snack items.

  3. Morning Work: Students work independently at their seats.

  4. English Language Arts: • Students will participate in phonics, comprehension, grammar, and writing activities. Literacy is an ongoing process. • The student is assessed by his/her improvement, formal and informal assessments, completion of homework, and class assignments.

  5. Recess& Lunch All of the first graders sit with their classes. You can send in money for lunch, or pre-purchase lunch tickets. Please label money for lunch tickets and put in a sealed envelope, so it does not get confused with spending money for the school store.

  6. Math: • We begin our math activities each day by looking at the calendar and weather. Students will be engaged in a mathematical thinking environment that encourages problem solving through the use of manipulatives, group work, hands-on learning, and literature. TOUCHPOINTS

  7. Social Studies/Science: • Our units of study will often alternate so that we are either studying a social studies topic or focusing on science.

  8. Snack: • Snack: Our snack-time lasts approximately 10-15 minutes and takes place in the afternoon, depending on our special. In compliance with the school wellness program, healthy snacks are encouraged. Keep snack items separate from lunch and make sure it is clearly labeled.

  11. Our Class Jobs • In order to create a sense of community in the classroom, all of the students participate in class jobs. • These jobs involve our everyday routines, keeping our classroom neat and clean, and organizing materials. • Jobs are rotated weekly and each child will have a chance to perform each task.

  12. Our Class Rules 1. Be a good listener. 2. Raise your hand before speaking. 3. Keep hands and feet to yourself. 4. Walk quietly in the hallway. 5. Be kind to others.

  13. BEHAVIOR • “Nice” with boundaries • Structure and Discipline • When not making a good choice, a student is first given a warning. • If the negative behavior continues a note goes home and/or a phone call is made. • All students begin on “Green” every day.

  14. Class Parties • I do not have a single “Class Mom/Dad” for our classroom. Rather, I post a list of all the parties, and ask parents to sign up for each one. This gives every parent the opportunity to come in and be in charge of a party if he/she wishes to do so. • There is one party in which all parents are welcome to attend – and that is the End of the Year Party. • Birthdays may be celebrated in class. You can drop off a treat at the front desk that we can share in school. If you want to come in for your child’s birthday you must give me ONE WEEK NOTICE, and also be aware that birthday celebrations last no longer than 10-15 minutes. • Party invitations for outside of school may be distributed in class, but only if all the children are invited (or all of the boys/all of the girls). • Class Party Sign Up Sheet

  15. Scholastic Book Clubs • Why Scholastic? They offer wonderful children’s books at reasonable prices. They also give us free books for our classroom! • Although I will be sending home Scholastic Book Club orders with your child approximately once a month, I am hoping that you will take advantage of our online ordering system. • Directions for Ordering Scholastic Online • Preview Parent Website / How to Register • If you are unable to order online, please send in the order form and a check made out to Scholastic Books in a sealed envelope. • Please remember that participation is strictly voluntary. • Scholastic and SunnyD!

The list of homework assignments for the week will be posted on our class website. • Homework will be checked daily. • All homework that is assigned should not last more than twenty minutes a night.
