AARP-Nurses Project • Purpose • Develop and discuss possible synergies and opportunities to working together to support family caregivers and nurses in the state of New York • Participants • National Alliance for Caregiving • AARP • NAC Coalition members • Nursing professionals • Community based service providers

  4. Potential Synergies 1-3 • Integrate services - Remove artificial separation of “social” vs. “medical” daycare • Research - “I’m not a dual eligible- who will be there for me?” • Advocate – Understand how to be more “disruptive” on behalf of caregivers

Potential Synergies 4-6 • Use common language - Move the policy agenda forward with the terms “caregiver” and/or "identified person” • Understand the “other” patient - Assist in the recognition of the family caregiver • What drives what?- Understand what is more affordable when comparing medical vs. community based services

Potential Synergies 7-9 • Recognize Caregiving – Discuss a potential addition to the Medicare Annual Wellness visit to include questions about family caregiving • Remove barriers to practice – Understand the barriers and issues that create struggles for Nurse Practitioners • Understand systems and transitions of care – Report on the disconnect between the family caregiver and health practitioner

Potential Synergies 10-12 • Bridge the gap – Work together to create caregiver navigators to liaison between doctors and caregivers for resources • Create first hand knowledge – Create shadowing opportunities for professionals to better understand the needs of family caregivers • Build education – Create placements for nursing, social work or other allied health education students within family caregiving situations

Potential Synergies 13-15 • Consider continuity in care - Build better relationships between the family unit and medical professionals to ease continuity of care • Ease communication - Create a family caregiver notebook • Frame family caregiving as a public health issue - “what do you need vs. this is what I have, do you want it?”

  9. Potential Synergies 16-17 • Increase knowledge - Design and translate models for caregiving • Reform payment – Restructure how family caregivers can be supported

Next Steps • Support economic research and make the business case for family caregivers to support policy change • Recommend 7th vital sign for nurses (are you a family caregiver?) • Center to Champion Nursing in America at AARP to check the Oasis to see about the family caregiver • NYSCRC to share a family caregiving curriculum developed in West Chester County, NY for reference or possible recreation

Next Steps • Create and share resources such as papers and research including local curriculum, PowerPoint presentations from NAC and AARP • NAC to check in about Utah Family Caregiving Coalition to get more information about family caregiver placement- University credits for respite care being provided by students to the family caregivers • Research development and grant opportunities to fund next steps (i.e. HRSA- nursing education)

Next Steps • NYCFCC to develop materials that detail models of advocacy- webinars, trainings and print outs • If applicable, present a united front on policy issues such as any future Medicaid waiver/reform policies • Develop Nursing Guidelines for Dealing with Family Caregivers – similar to work conducted by NASW
