  3. Basic Beliefs • Founded in Japan about 500 B.C.   • Focuses on life while your alive it rather than death • Japan and its people are chosen and special to the gods (kami) • Everything revolves around kami

  4. Sacred Texts • Kojiki • Nihon-gi

  5. Afterlife • They focus more on fitting in to this world • After death a shintobecomes a "family spirit", or "family kami." 

  6. Major Rules/Impacts on Everyday Life • 4 Basic Rules: • Purification • Impurities pollute body • Cause misfortune • Purification rituals • Presentation • Everything prepared with care • Prayer • Pray in small shrines • Chanting/Dancing rituals • Participation • Gifts given to contributors of a ceremony • Shows they participated • Priests responsible for protecting shrines • Sermons on important religious days

  7. Concept of God • Believe in many gods • Don’t make images of them, but symbols • Important god; Anaterasu-omi Kami • Sun-God • Modern Japan usually believe in one God • Divinity in all natural things

  8. What Draws People? • Not allowed to join, must be born into • People enjoy the idea of nature being center of worship • History is quite long/entertaining
