  1. NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AGRICULTURE FOR RABI CAMPAIGN 2012, NEW DELHI (24th – 25th SEPT 2012) GOVERNMENT OF NAGALAND DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

  2. BASIC INFORMATION 1. Population Census (2011) Total population: 19,80,602 Rural population: 14,06,861 Total farming household: 2,50,360 2. Total Geographical Area : 16,579 Sq.km Total cultivable area: 7,21,924 ha Gross cropped area: 3,84,180 ha Double cropped area: 84,700 ha Net cropped area: 2,99,480 ha Gross irrigated area: 92,040 ha Net irrigated area: 83,500 ha 3. Food-grain Production (2011-12) : 5,70,440 MT 4. Oilseeds Production (2011-12) : 68,120 MT 5. Commercial Production (2011-12) : 4,24,230 MT

  3. AREA & PRODUCTION ACHIEVEMENT DURING RABI 2011-12 AREA & PRODUCTION TARGET FOR RABI 2012-13

  4. RAINFALL STATUS IN NAGALAND (UPTO AUGUST 2012 Monthly average rainfall in mm • ISSUES: • The monsoon rain in the state is below last year till August 2012 which is likely to hamper Kharif crops specially paddy in TRC/WRC condition. • The monsoon rain has increased from 1st week of Sept which is indicative of better scope for Rabi crops. Hence, the state strategy is to increase area & production of Rabi crops in the state.

  5. QUALITY SEEDS (IMPROVED VARIETIES/HYBRID) During Kharif 2012, the seeds were mostly procurred from NSC/SFCI and distribution of seeds was done in campaign mode.

  6. During Rabi, seeds arrangement has already been done tying up with NSC/SFCI and Truthfully Labelled Seeds from the State Seed farms. (State Seed Farms from Merapani, Tizit, Tuensang, Baghty & SARS) TARGET & REQUIREMENT OF SEEDS FOR RABI 2012-13

  7. SEED TREATMENT Seeds both of Kharif & Rabi are mostly procured from NSC/SFCI and they are all treated at source. Hence, state level does not take up separate seed treatment for the procured seeds. However, seed treatment for TLS of state seed farms produce are being done in the farm store itself before issue to farmers. In addition, the state is having seed testing laboratory which does testing of all procured seeds mostly the germination test and seed health. PLANT PROTECTION The state is well equipped with plant protection measures having enough man power covering district level, block level and village level supported by ATMA, MMA programmes. During Rabi 2012-13, it is proposed to take up farm field schools in larger area with the support of RKVY 2012-13.

  8. PROPER PLANT POPULATION: There is significant improvement in the package and practices technologies adopted by the farmers specially line sowing, line transplanting resulting increase in productivity as shown in picture. NSFM programme has launched during 2012-13 and through this programme massive Demos on line sowing, line transplanting and SRI has already began in the State.

  9. DIVERSIFICATION OF CEREAL CROPPING. Crop diversification is taking place in the State specially in Jhum system. Farmers are now changing their crop planning from Jhuming/Shifting to settled farming by taking up Pineapple, Orchard (Citrus) Lemon grass, vegetables aromatic & medicinal and other plantation crops like Tea, Cardamon, Rubber etc. Traditional Jhum field Citrus plantation Pineapple plantation Lemon grass

  10. Kiwi Cardamom Naga King Chilli Tea

  11. INNOVATIVE PRACTICE FOR HILL AGRICULTURE UNDER NSFM. The stable food is Rice and cultivation of paddy is both in Jhum and TRC/WRC. Except Plain sector paddy fields, all hill sector paddy fields in TRC/WRC are against stiff slope and terrain/topography condition is such that nursery raising in rainfed condition becomes difficult to adopt SRI. Hence, the innovation of farmers in the hill sector has devised a system of raising Rice-seedlings on Pseudo stem of Banana. SRI needs very tender seedlings for transplanting and this methods becomes easier for farmers to carry seedlings of desired age to any part of the fields. Moreover, Banana pseudo stem gives moisture sufficient for seed germination to a desirable age. This will help farmers in adopting SRI in Hill Terraces.

  12. FERTILIZERS The state has adopted Organic policy. However, the area other than organic farming, application of chemical fertilizers in necessary to boost up production apart from its use for research and experimentation. The farmers are encouraged for integrated use of chemical fertilizers along with organic sources viz., green manure, Bio-compost, Vermi-compost, Bio-fertilizers etc. The fertilizer position in case of Urea is comfortable. The dealers are able to procure the same from BVFCL, Namrup as and when demand arises. In case of DAP there was always shortage as IFFCO, Guwahati did not supply any. However, the supply position of DAP should be improved as there will be demand during Rabi for Potato and other winter crops.

  13. ISSUES SEEDS : Late arrival of Seeds is the problem in the State. Optimum sowing time of winter Crops is September & October except Wheat in November. Therefore, NSC may take appropriate action for timely delivery. FERTILIZER : Inorganic fertilizers consumption is less in the State, But more consumption is during Rabi. DAP demand is more during the season. However, this is not available. Fertilizer corporations may accordingly take appropriate action. AGRIL.MACHINERY: There is a restriction of agricultural machinery like Tractor under MMA & RKVY where as there is no other scheme/programme to procure. Power tiller alone is not enough to cover more area specially during Rabi which needs immediate land preparation after the Kharif crop harvest. Therefore, GOI may consider for relaxation. NFSM : NFSM (Rice) is already in progress from 2012-13, and the State is popular with Millets/Jobster which the farmers have been cultivating since forefathers. And also Rajmah which locally called Kholar production during Rabi is getting momentum with an annual production of 4000 MT in the State. Therefore, NFSM (Millets) or NFSM (Pulses) may also be considered for the state during 12th Plan.
