America’s HS dropout challenge • There’s another high school dropout every 26 seconds. • Dropouts cost taxpayers more than $8 billion annually in public assistance programs like food stamps – and make up nearly half the heads of households on welfare. • Dropouts commit about 75 percent of crimes and are more likely to be incarcerated; almost 60 percent of federal inmates are high school drop outs. • Sixty percent of the nation's high school dropouts are older than 40; most of them left high school to start working, but few move beyond low paying, dead-end jobs. • America’s high school graduation rate ranks 19th in the world (forty years ago, we were number one).

Who is the typical COHS student? • Age & Gender • 42 year old, Hispanic female • Why I dropped out? • “I dropped out at age 15, due to being pregnant” • Why did I decide to go back to school to earn my high school diploma? • “I have encountered many opportunities in my office for career advancement.   I have the experience, the motivation, and the intelligence to excel, but was lacking a high school diploma and a bachelors degree. Thus, in order to enroll in college, I needed a high school diploma, so I decided to enroll in COHS, due to its flexibility.” • How did I hear about COHS? • “I heard about the program while taking two professional development accounting courses thru ed2go. • What do I like most about COHS? • “The program is well-designed and knowing that you have someone (i.e., Academic Coach) to encourage you and not judge you is a nice feeling.  This is an amazing program that is showing me a bright future ahead and thanks to this program, I will be able to  fulfill my dream of  going to college and teach my kids that is never to late to better yourself.” • What community college did you enroll through? • “Florida Institute of Technology”

Who is the typical COHS student? • Age & Gender • 39 year old, Hispanic female • Why I dropped out? • “I was 17 years old and in the12th grade.  My mother had marital problems, left the house, and my sister and I and moved to Texas. As the older sibling, I thought of my sister's education and how important it was for her to stay in school especially since she was only 14 and in middle school.  Because we didn't have family that would take us in, I had no choice but to quit school and work full time to support the both of us.  It was an extremely hard decision for me to make especially since it was my last year of high school, but didn't know what else to do. • Why did I decide to go back to high school to earn my high school diploma? • “I have always had a gap in my life.   When I learned about COHS, I was very excited.  Although, I only had one year left of high school, I didn't want to get a GED.  I feel that COHS is going to fill that gap and provide me with the high school education I missed out during my last year of high school.” • How did I hear about COHS? • “I heard about COHS through ed2go.  I previously took courses through ed2go. • What do I like most about COHS? • “I started the high school program several weeks ago and so far so good.  I am married, mother of two and work full-time, so this high school program is exactly what I was looking for. It's 100 % on-line, so it fits my schedule. The courses are easy to understand and self-taught.  I also love that it allows me to work at my own pace. • What community college did you enroll through? • “Broward Community College”
