  2. About Ms. Gilson • Grew up in Doylestown, PA • Worked with children for 11 years • Graduated from Penn State in 2011 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Special Education • 2nd year teaching 1st/2nd grade at PFE!

  4. Goals for the year: • Have fun while learning! • Become good citizens • Provide a safe, nurturing, and supportive classroom environment for each child • Encourage a love of learning

Daily Folders • Math Homework • 1st Grade - most Tuesdays and Thursdays • 2nd Grade - most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays • Return the next day • IXL • Extra practice • Visit Ms. Gilson’s or Mrs. M’s PFE Websites for more information • Reading Clocks • Sent home Fridays • Read throughout the week and return the following Friday • Word Cards • Sight word cards to practice with your child • Complete the activities and return when finished • Family Information • Important papers • Return ASAP in the folder

  8. Arrival/Morning Work • 8:30 – Doors open, students arrive • Turn in folders, sign-up for lunch • 8:44 – Morning Announcements • Coming in after this time, must sign in at the office • Until 8:50 – Morning work • Finish up class work • Morning activities • Friday Free Time if caught up

Morning Meeting • Community Building Activities • Greet each other, songs, games • News and Announcements • Daily schedule, classroom jobs, important information • Calendar • Discuss numbers and patterns in the calendar • Sharing • Share special things or stories • Appropriate for school • Ways to ask questions or say comments about someone’s sharing

Daily 5/CAFE • Daily 5 Activities – Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading • So far, we have worked on Read to Self and Work on Writing • CAFÉ – Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, Expand Vocabulary • Strategies we have learned to improve our reading • Check for Understanding (Comprehension) • Cross Checking (Accuracy) • Students will participate in 3 “Rounds” of Daily 5 choices while I pull small groups for CAFÉ strategy groups, book groups, and individual conferences • Volunteers! • Once we have our routine established, I’ll ask for family volunteers to join us at this time (9:10-10:20)

Snack • Healthy options – fruits, vegetables • My website and District Wellness Policy • Online Class Snack Sign-Up • Email out each month • Sign up for a day to send in snack for our class • Keep extras in the classroom • What if my child does not like what is provided? • Only eat what was sent in that day • Keep something in backpack just incase

Math • Trying a “Daily 5” approach to teaching the concepts • Choices of activities from a variety of resources • Fact Games, Number Games, Strategy Games, Math Tools (iPads), and Paper Practice • Family Letters • Please read the Family Letters to become familiar with the vocabulary of Math Expressions. • Homework • Homework reviews what was learned in that day’s lesson. It is practice. • Remembering reviews what has been learned in prior lessons. • Other options • Math games online • IXL

  13. Recess • We go outside every day, weather permitting • Inside – free play • On Phys. Ed. days, we do not have an outside break because of district guidelines • We use this time to catch up on other activities or write in our Family Message Journals (coming soon!) • Clothing • Sneakers are best in the grass/mulch • We go outside even with snow, unless it is below 20 degrees • Please send warm jackets, boots, hats, and gloves when it gets cold and snowy!

Lunch (12:15-12:45) • Students buying lunch get an entrée and 2 sides • Send money in Daily Folder • We will eat in our classroom 1 or 2 months during the year • No food allergies • You are welcome to join your child for lunch! • Send a note with your child that morning or email me before 9:00 • If you are buying, let me know which lunch I should sign you up for!!!

  15. Writer’s Workshop • Students will participate in Writer’s Workshop that is separate from the “Work on Writing” that is part of Daily 5 • We will work on • Small Moments • Poetry • How – To books • Research projects • Informational books • Persuasive Writing • Letters

Specials • Monday – P.E. with Mrs. McDermott • Tuesday – iPads with Ms. Gilson • Gathering (2:00-2:40) • All School Gathering – Awards, Class Presentations, Guest Speakers • Small School Gathering – small group activities with a teacher • Wednesday – Music with Mrs. Begg • Thursday – Art with Mr. Cosgrove • Friday – Library with Mrs. Collins

  19. Conferences • Thursday, October 18 and Friday, October 19 • Conference is between Parent, Teacher, and student! • We will be deciding on goals for the year and sharing some things we have worked on so far • Please sign up for a conference time tonight if you can!

  20. Scavenger Hunt! • Students each have a scavenger hunt to show you around our classroom and to introduce me to all of you! Have fun! • Thank you for coming and please let me know if you have any questions!
