  1. Part 2/2 Geneva Baja SAEProject Progress Report

  2. Drive Train • SAE specifies using a Briggs & Stratton 10 Hp OHV Intek Model 205432 • SAE requires the governor setting not to exceed 3800 RPM

  3. Manual Transmission vs. CVT • Manual Transmission • More efficient • More control • Throttle response • CVT • Easier to use • Easier to install • Engine always running at max rpm • Must stay dry

  4. Manual Transmission • Yamaha YZ-80 Engine

  5. Drive Train Setup • Engine-Transmission • Belt Drive for better high rpm performance • One variable pitch pulley, and one constant pitch pulley to adjust for different events • Shifting engine to tension the belt • Transmission-Rear Axle • Chain drive for easier matching of existing subassemblies • Shifting Axle to tension the chain

  6. Estimated Speed (MPH)

  7. Suspension Design Suspension Assembly Drawn By Scott Miner

  8. Design Goals • Lightweight • Long suspension travel • Achieve high ground clearance • Aesthetically pleasing • High durability • Economically feasible • Relatively simple to manufacture/mate to frame

  9. Front Suspension • Design Considerations • Steering System • Suspension Travel • Camber Angle • Caster Angle • Toe Angle • Ackerman Angle • Bump Steer

  10. Camber Angle

  11. Caster Angle

  12. Toe Angle

  13. Ackerman Angle

  14. Bump Steer Bump Steer is when the wheels steer themselves without input from the steering wheel. The undesirable steering is caused by bumps in the track interacting with improper length or angle of suspension and steering linkages.

  15. Front Suspension Design • 2007 Polaris Outlaw • A-Arms • Spindle/Hub Assembly • Brake discs/calipers • Fox® Podium X Upgraded Shocks (stiffness, rebound damping adjustable) • Tie rods

  16. Rear Suspension Types Trailing Arm Vs. Independent Notice the ground clearance difference where the sprocket is on both set-ups

  17. Independent Rear Suspension • Pros • Ground Clearance • Aesthetics • Handling • Cons • Efficiency • Complexity

  18. Rear Suspension Design • 2007 Polaris Outlaw • A-Arms • Hubs • Brake Disc and Caliper • Rear Drive Axle Assembly • Fox® Podium X Shocks with Piggyback Reservoirs

  19. Remaining Work • Finalize all aspects of frame design • Finalize all aspects of drive train design • Fabricate entire vehicle • Testing/Driver training • Rework issues discovered during testing • Travel arrangements • Additional fundraising
