Procedure for Group Work. Group Work is a privilege in any classroom to be earned. Therefore, if I assign you a group you will work with that group, no discussion, no questioning, no exceptions. If you lose your group work privilege you will work alone. UNIT 2. ADAPTATIONS! .

  1. Procedure for Group Work • Group Work is a privilege in any classroom to be earned. • Therefore, if I assign you a group you will work with that group, no discussion, no questioning, no exceptions. • If you lose your group work privilege you will work alone.

  2. UNIT 2 ADAPTATIONS!

  3. Where are we headed? • State objective: Assess how an organism’s chances for survival are influenced by adaptations toits environment. (DOK 2)

  4. Importance of Questions! • Questions are our car on the ROAD to college!

  5. Question of the UNIT! • How do organisms survive in harsh or changing environments?

  6. Question of the Day! Do all animals have an equal chance of surviving in a certain habitat?

  7. Hypothesis Time! Do all animals have an equal chance of surviving in a certain habitat?

  8. To get thinking about that question… • You’re going to be doing a lab to model whether certain color M&Ms have a better chance of surviving on a certain habitat/background.

  9. First, everyone in your group needs a job • Hunter: Will be closing his/her eyes and then picking the first 3 M&Ms that he/she sees. • Animal Distributor: Will be spreading the M&Ms out on the fabric each round. • Game Warden: Will count the M&Ms that survive each round. • Recorder: Will make sure everyone is correctly recording the # of M&Ms on the back • if you only have 3 people, skip the recorder

  10. The hunter will close their eyes for 5 seconds, open then and pick the first 3 M&Ms they see – put them in the cup. These M&Ms were hunted. • The hunter will do this 3 more times. • The game warden will count how many M&Ms of each color survived. • Record that in Surviving Population Generation 1 • The animal distributor raise his or her hand.BE PATIENT! Mr. Vo will give you 1 M&M’s for every surviving M&M. • Fill in how many offspring of each color you get under Offspring Generation 1. • Add the “Offspring” + “Surviving” to figure out how many total of each color you now have, and fill in the right column.

  11. Question of the Day! Do all animals have an equal chance of surviving in a certain habitat?

  12. Answer to our Question of the Day • Some animals are better suited (adapted) to survive in certain habitats. In this case, the “animals” that blended into the “habitat” were less likely to be eaten off.

  13. Exit Ticket • In your own words, what does adaptation mean? • How were certain M&Ms adapted to live in your habitat?
