  2. The Goal  A Checklist  The Model … an integrated suite of applications and services that support: • teaching • informal learning • academic authoring • research • advising • program and curricula reviews i.e., all academic (non-admin) work of students & faculty Charles Kerns, SULAIR, Spring 2005

  3. A Checklist  The Goal • content mgmt services  evolving towardmy personal knowledge environment  all manner of resources (compound, complex, media, data, …)  any/multiple venues from wall-sized displays to personal phones + storage & preservation capacity to match • rich metadata capabilities  explicit – formal & informal, institutional & personal  implicit – derived from the work and its associations  computed – taxonomic hierarchies, associative links +mapped networks of relationships (e.g., citations, use-patterns) search, browse, alert, … • powerful discovery & navigation tools + agents that can mine deep stores of content + tools to manage feeds & subscriptions from what's new services • pervasive distribution & publication services  all formats & all sources  local & distant  formal & informal

  4. A Checklist  The Goal • seamless, permanent access to content • flexible, highly granular DRM services • components  AuthN/Z, name, role, context  licenses, contracts, IP & other rights  types of use, redistribution, mixing • scope  individuals, groups  departments & schools, campuses  world-wide collaboratories • bandwidth that supports rich media, video, teleconferencing + delivery channels for all manner of device types • computing horsepower that scales to support the growth of srvcs

  5. Extending the interface-layer model  It’s a "many to many" problem myStuff work space, projects, drafts, tools & files JHU's "interface" layer  From CNI presentation, Spring 2005 A Technology analysis of repositories and services -- a Mellon project at Johns Hopkins University abstract: http://www.cni.org/tfms/2005a.spring/abstracts/PB-martino-technology.html Johns Hopkins project site: http://ldp.library.jhu.edu/projects/repository

  6. Extending the interface-layer model  support for all academic work Scope: amalgamate faculty & student activities academic work • bring collaboration in as an explicit component of research research collaboration research research group study peer review • bring group study into the mix as well myStuff work space, projects, drafts, tools & files course peer review course course advising portfolio course portfolio • include various flavors of ePortfolios program portfolio course job portfolio students  best work from my courses  search for a position  faculty advice on programs faculty  academic program mgmt issues  advising students

  7. Extending the interface-layer model  support for all academic work • set myStuff apart from activities to help avoid many-to-many problems Scope: amalgamate faculty & student activities academic work collaboration research collaboration • objective: glue that helps linkmyStuff with my academic work research course peer review group study  use an open source framework sakai course advising portfolio peer review program portfolio course job portfolio • reality: many activities will go forward outside the Sakai framework course portfolio myStuff work space, projects, drafts, tools & files myStuff work space, projects, drafts, tools & files myStuff work space, projects, drafts, tools & files • myStuff -- a wide range of tools in play •  some based in Sakai • many will be fully separate all are within academic work
