  2. After the American Revolution, whatdid the Patriots fear the most? • All of the rights that people fought and died for would be lost because of a strong central government.

  3. What was the first government of the United States? • The Articles of Confederation

  4. Why were the Articles of Confederation written? • Americans realized they needed a central government to deal with paying soldiers and negotiating treaties.

  5. What were the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation? • No chief executive • No power to tax • No court system • Only one branch

  6. Which had the most power under the Articles, the federal government or the state governments? • State governments

  7. What caused Shays’ Rebellion? • Farmers were mad about being taxed too high • People were angry at having their land taken away from them • the government was too weak to do anything about it

  8. What was Shays’ rebellion about? • The farmers were having their land taken away because they were in debt. • The continental money was worthless. • They were highly taxed.

  9. Why was the Constitutional Convention held? • To discuss ways to improve the Articles of Confederation What was the greatest challenge for the delegates? How to balance the interests of large and small states

  10. What were the two main disagreements about in the Constitutional Convention? • Representation and slavery

  11. How will states be represented in the government? • The Virginia Plan: There will be 3 Branches. In the Legislative Branch there will be 2 Houses. The number of representatives in each house will be based on a state’s population. • The New Jersey Plan: There will be 3 Branches. There will be 1 House in the Legislature. Each state will be represented equally in that House.

  12. The Great Compromise • There would be two Houses. The House of Representatives would be based on population, while the Senate will have equal representation from the states.

  13. What was the compromise called that dealt with slavery? • The 3/5 Compromise • It allowed the southern states to count each slave as 3/5 of a person so they could have more representatives in the House of Representatives

  14. What are the first three words of the Constitution and what does it mean? • “We the People..” • Government power comes from the people.

  15. The Legislative Branch • ALIAS: Congress • JOB: To make the laws • TWO HOUSES: House of Representatives & The Senate • The House members serve for 2 years • The Senators serve for 6 years.

  16. The Executive Branch • ALIAS: The Presidential Branch • JOB: To enforce or carry out laws • The President is joined by the Vice President and Cabinet members that advise him or her.

  17. The Judicial Branch • ALIAS: The Supreme Court • JOB: To make sure that laws are constitutional • The Supreme Court is made up of 9 Justices. The head of the Supreme Court is the Chief Justice. • They serve for LIFE.

  18. How many amendments to the Constitution have there been? • 27

  19. What are the first ten amendments to the Constitution called? • The Bill of Rights

  20. Why were the Bill of Rights added to the Constitution? • Many states wouldn’t sign the Constitution without a bill of rights • Many people believed it was needed to limit the power of the national government. • The writers of the Constitution wanted to protect the people’s personal rights and freedoms.

  21. Ratification of Amendments • 3/5th of State Legislatures must ratify an Amendment.

  22. Review your Amendment Notes • 1st Amendment: Freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, petition • 2nd: Right to bear arms • 3rd: No quartering of soldiers • 4th: Search and Seizure • 5th: Rights of the Accused • 9th and 10th: These two Amendments keep and balance of power and rights.
