Intended Outcomes • Determine need for the Alumni Association, Advisory Board or Province Council • Identify reasons Alumni Brothers volunteer • Utilize tools available to find Alumni • Fit Alumni in a role to fit their skills and availability • Practice using several tools to communicate with Alumni

  3. Why Volunteer? • Social aspect • Want to give back • Live in new area • Have a special talent, profession, skill • Chapter needs help • Want to improve housing safety • Keep the Ritual alive

  4. Why Volunteers Quit? • Continual issues with Undergrad, probations, etc. • The delivery of the Record • Alumni survey within the engaged base • No communication • Too much communication • Style of communication • Email CC, and too many follow up CC all • Newsletters not consistent • Facebook only • Mismatched expectations • Lack of experienced, trained volunteers

  5. Determining your needs • Existing organization growth • Re-starting a group • Cold starting a group • Chapter, Area or Province • Professional networking • Socialization • Philanthropic outlet

Some Numbers • 184,264 living Alumni • 215 Alumni Associations • How many of these alumni donate to SAE? • 40,000 brothers have made a gift • 6,200 make a gift every year • 5,800 of them unrestricted • 51 Official Family, 20 Past ESAs and ESRs, 135 committee members, 1074 Chapter/Alumni Advisors, 183 House Corp officers

Finding Alumni • Start with the FSC • Tremendous staff support • Great database to start from • Can be sorted by • Local Chapter alumni only • Donation history • ZIP code to capture any Alumni living in an area • Use the University Alumni Association • Reach out to your Alumni network • Email, Facebook, LinkedIn • Province Leadership Schools • Social Events • Find the right blend • Look to Senior Undergrads

  8. Find the right fit for your volunteers • Busy guy? • Mentor an officer • Attend a meeting • Golf at an outing • Bring food to Homecoming • Sit in on an Initiation • Edit a newsletter • Sponsor one Chapter event

Generational Differences • Just a touch of the June webinar by Chris Hallam • Fraternity men feel that everything is an expression of their individuality • Feedback needs to be constructive and sensitive can result in tears and resignation • They do not respond to “Do It” views of authority • They value recognition and positive reinforcement • The need to pick your battles • Should I phone them? Text Them? E-mail them? Message on facebook? How about in person?

Hook Them Earlyand Start Small • Find an alumnus good at working with, and connecting, the young Chapter members • Hold Graduation Ritual for Seniors • Connect the graduates to the alumni world • Gather interest group well in advance of an event • Get one event planned • Don’t overwhelm with too much • Build a small motivated team • Help avoid burnout Can you commit to finding three alumni? • Three in the next year
