  1. “She Stole My Heart On The Way To The Sermon” Larry Cline - Hardin Valley Church of Christ - 1/26/2014

  2. Luke 7:36-39 • 36Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee's house and reclined [at the table]. 37And there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining [at the table] in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume, 38and standing behind [Him] at His feet,

  3. weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with the perfume 39Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.”

  4. The Scene: Normally there were certain common courtesiesextended to guests. • Feet would be washed • Host would extend greetings with a kiss • Anoint guest’s head with sweet smelling, cooling oil All of these went together to say “Welcome”. None of these happened here.

  5. A meal is being served & some incredible things happen: Mary’s heart breaks Jesus’ heart is touched deeply Simon’s heart is cold & judgmental

  6. The Story: 40And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41“A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, "You have judged correctly.” (Luke 7:40-43)

  7. Denarius equals a day’s wage. • One owed ten weeks work • The other owed 100 weeks work 2 years!

  8. Simon, nobody could pay their debts. • Both were forgiven • Who would love him more?

  9. Lessons: The way you act, how you serve, what you sacrifice, the passion you display means something to God.

  10. What she did was between herand Jesus even though it touched others. • Jesus could see her faith

  11. Everyone is in debt. • An important asset when you’re in debt is a good memory. • Simon forgot… have you?

  12. Mary was paying Jesus back…? • No, all she was doing was saying, “Thankyou, Lord. Thank you for removing my sin.”

  13. Forgivenessis available to everyone. • Realize forgiveness always cost something: • Cost the money lender 550 denarii • Cost God the agony of Gethsemane & pain of cavalry

  14. Write Well!
