  3. Rate – Reach • Data rate - reach is limited by channel capacity theorem • Wire gauge: bigger is better • The trade off: • The longer the distance the lower the bit rate • The shorter the distance the higher bit rate

  4. Rate - Reach • The effects of Wire attenuation and Far End Cross Talk (FEXT) increase with higher frequencies • Multiple services (ADSL, E1, ISDN) and multiple EoV links in the same bundle are significant noise sources

  11. PSD Mask • The Power Spectrum Density (PSD) is limited to avoid disturbance to other communication systems • The EoV complies with the ETSI VDSL PSD requirements

  12. PSD Mask • Maximum transmit power (upstream and downstream combined) is limited to 11.5dBm. • The ETSI PSD limit values for the PSD masks are: • 40dBm/hz is allowed up to EoV band • 60dBm/hz is allowed in the EoV band • The EoV conforms to the 60dBm/hz limit PSD [dBm/hertz] 40 dBm 60 dBm EoV

  16. Power Backoff Algorithm • The PBO function causes the NT side to transmit at the minimum possible PSD. • This prevents interference and cross-talk in a mix of short and long loops in the same cable. • Modems operating on short loops transmit less power than modems on long loops.

  17. PBO procedure in EoV • The NT starts to transmit, using the minimum level of power defined in the standard • The NT, which is in the “Tune Power Level” state, increases its power level whenever it receives a request from the LT. • The LT sends requests for more power, until convergence is reached on the received signal, with a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) that guarantees a 6dB margin at full constellation.

  18. Rate Limitation • EoV supports configuration of line speed for tiered billing purposes • EM2003 modules implement rate limitation through the VDSL carrier in these selectable speeds • 0.7M, 1M, 2M, 3M, 4M, 5.5M, 7.5M, 8.5M, 11M • Future EM2004 modules implement rate limitation in the ASIC in Kbps level increments • Downstream and Upstream can be configured independently of each other • The maximal bandwidth is limited by the physical link

Splitters and Filters • The splitter separates the VDSL signal from low frequency services such as POTS, 2B1Q ISDN, 4B3T ISDN or ping-pong (smart phone) ISDN • The splitter places a Low Pass Filter (ISDN/POTS Splitter) in parallel with a High Pass Filter (VDSL filter) • Combines/separates the Transmit and Receive VDSL signals - Hybrid functionality. • Filters leakage (echo)

  22. Management • Full SNMP management • Supports RMON (groups 1, 2, 3, 9) • Telnet, port mirroring • GUI through MegaVision or other SNMP compliant applications • Web based management through MegaVision

  23. Management • Ethernet over VDSL specific management options • vdsl-set-port-rate - selects speed of VDSL, manually set the Upstream and Downstream. • vdsl-auto-test-ports - sets automatic test for the VDSL links ,which establishes link based on bundle SNR and BER

  24. Management • Statistics and counters • vdsl-set-ber-report - reports Bit Error Rate to the network management system • vdsl-get-port-snr - get the SNR per port • vdsl-get-eth-cnt - gets the Ethernet counters per port
